Student answer (Band 7.0)
Having a hobby is important for people of all ages, including children, young adults, working professionals and retired people. I strongly agree with this view because hobbies can reduce stress, improve mental well-being and help people maintain a balanced lifestyle.
For children, hobbies can play an important role in their overall development. Activities such as playing sports, drawing or learning a musical instrument can improve their creativity, discipline and social skills. Hobbies can also teach children how to manage their time and work towards a goal. For young adults, having a hobby can provide a healthy break from studies or work. For example, reading, travelling or exercising can help them relax and develop new interests.
Working people can also benefit greatly from having a hobby. Since many employees spend several hours each day at work, they may experience stress and tiredness. Spending time on activities such as cooking, gardening or playing sports can help them refresh their minds and maintain a better work-life balance. Moreover, hobbies can sometimes help people develop useful skills that may benefit them professionally.
For retired people, hobbies can make their lives more enjoyable and meaningful. After retirement, people may have more free time, and activities such as gardening, painting or joining a community group can keep them active and socially connected. These activities can also reduce feelings of loneliness.
In conclusion, I believe that everyone should have at least one hobby. Although the choice of activity may differ according to a person's age and interests, hobbies can provide relaxation, perso

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing the importance of hobbies across all four specified life stages: children, young adults, working people, and the retired. The writer establishes a clear and consistent position in the introduction ("I strongly agree with this view") and maintains it throughout the essay. Each body paragraph logically tackles one demographic group, providing relevant examples such as sports and drawing for children, or gardening and community groups for the retired. The ideas are well-developed and extended appropriately, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, guiding the reader smoothly from the introduction through the different age groups to a logical conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and appropriately, such as "For children," "For young adults," "Working people can also benefit," and "Moreover." Paragraphing is used sufficiently and logically to separate ideas, resulting in an essay that is easy to follow and cohesive.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with adequate flexibility and precision for the task. Words and phrases such as "overall development," "work-life balance," "socially connected," and "maintain a balanced lifestyle" demonstrate a good grasp of topic-specific collocation. While the vocabulary tends to be standard rather than exceptionally sophisticated—fitting a solid Band 6 or 7—there are no distracting lexical errors, and the message is communicated clearly and naturally throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. The writer successfully employs subordinate clauses and infinitive phrases, such as "Since many employees spend several hours each day at work, they may experience stress..." Punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled accurately. While the sentence structures are not overly complex or varied enough to push into higher bands, the grammatical control is strong with very few errors, supporting a secure Band 7.
