Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the importance of hobbies for different age groups, specifically working people, kids, and senior citizens, agreeing that having a hobby is important. However, the response fails the minimum length requirement, containing only 195 words instead of the required 250 words. Due to this significant under-length, the development of ideas is limited and remains somewhat repetitive and under-developed, particularly in the conclusion where the prompt is merely restated without adding deeper insight. The position is stated, but the lack of sufficient elaboration prevents the ideas from being fully extended. Therefore, Task Achievement is penalised for length and limited development, resulting in a band score of 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates a basic structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an attempt at organisation. However, the overall progression is weak due to the brevity of the text. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and at times mechanical, such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly'. The referencing within sentences is occasionally unclear or abrupt, for instance transitioning between ideas without smooth transitional phrases ('Working people finished their work after they can spend time...'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are very brief and underdeveloped. Overall, cohesion is faulty in places, aligning best with a band 5.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary throughout the response. Phrases like 'favourite activity', 'stress free', and 'kids and youngers persons' are repeated frequently. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'youngers', 'professionals’ persons', 'make cooking', 'fresh mind and physical', and 'fell stress free and happiness their live'. These lexical inaccuracies and the restricted vocabulary range cause some difficulty and strain for the reader, fitting the criteria for a band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many of the attempts at complex structures are faulty or incomplete, such as 'I strongly believe that, I will explain this essay' and 'Hobbies are not only enjoyment but it helps decrease stress.' There are frequent grammatical errors involving verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, prepositions, and word forms (e.g., 'Working people finished their work after they can spend time', 'when people doing their favourite work, they fell'). While communication is occasionally achieved, these frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited grammatical range and accuracy, meriting a band 5.0.
