Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the prompt, agreeing with the statement that people of all ages benefit from having a hobby. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are presented for different age groups, such as children and working adults, and supported with relevant examples like drawing and gardening. However, some ideas lack full extension and development. Furthermore, the response is slightly under the 250-word minimum, containing 246 words, which impacts the overall completeness and leads to a minor penalty under Task Achievement. Despite this, the core requirements of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, introducing the introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to structure the text, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'To conclude'. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the sentence 'They provide a break from our day to day life circumstances and from work too. which is incorrectly changes our mood' demonstrates incorrect punctuation and disjointed flow. Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise. Paragraphing is present, but logical progression between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. This corresponds well to a Band 6.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'mental and emotional wellbeing', 'think out of the box', and 'social connections'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from precision, such as 'assential' instead of essential, 'accept' instead of except, 'admired' instead of admire, 'develpos' instead of develops, and 'containd' instead of contain. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0 as they highlight limitations in control and accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with structures like 'In this modernized era, it is assential to have a hobby as it gives you a motivation...' However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. Examples include sentence fragments such as 'which is indirectly changes our mood' and awkward phrasing like 'It provides a person to grow personally'. Subject-verb agreement errors also occur, such as 'everyone has hobby which they admired'. Punctuation is faulty in places, particularly with full stops incorrectly placed before dependent clauses. These errors occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar firmly at a Band 5.5.
