Student answer (Band 6.0)

People of different age groups have their own choices of spending their me time, some people have an active passion for a hobby, while others unconsciously find something interesting to do during their chill time. An opinion will be formed in this essay regarding the aspect of pursuing a hobby by the different age groups.

I personally believe that everyone, including working class, young adults, and children should have a hobby as it impacts the human mental well-being, explore new interesting horizons, increase networking, and assist in maintaining a healthy life style in some of the cases. By studying the human psychology, we find that people have always been inclined towards their own choices. For example, some people aspire to be good athletes, while some love to do travel; however, in majority of the cases, people are not able to convert their passion into a source of livelihood. Therefore, it is critical for such working people to not discard their passion towards their hobby, but rather keep it alive during their chill time, as consequently, they can keep themselves involved into their hobby and keep that social circle alive as well, which is very important for human mental well-being.

With reference to young adults, it is equally important to have a hobby as it helps them to keep themselves away from the uninfluential groups. A hobby like sports, cycling, hiking, and running helps young adults to remain physically active and healthy. Young adults enjoy more leisure time in comparison with working people, therefore, they are more prone to get diverted to groups which are not of their interests, and it will just waste their time. A pursuit of their passion towards a particular hobby like exercise will help them to remain focused; they can usually do this by joining such communities and groups. Recently, such groups have been active on social media platforms, and they usually announce their events calendar on those portals.

Contrary to the above two categories of people, who usually do their self assessment and choose a hobby, children should be given freedom to find out their interest; however, that should remain under proper supervision and guidance. A proper guided approach towards children to help them identify their passion, can have enormous benefits, as they can excel in their passion if they devote time to that activity. It has been noticed recently through the easy access of information online that how children outperform in activities like quiz competition etc., because their passion is crafted by the help of their parent at a very young age.

In conclusion, it is important for all age group of people to maintain a favored hobby, which will help them maintain a healthy social and physical life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, expressing a clear personal opinion that hobbies are crucial for individuals across all mentioned age groups. The position is maintained throughout the essay. The student extends and supports ideas well, discussing the benefits of hobbies for working people, young adults, and children respectively. For instance, the argument regarding young adults highlights how hobbies prevent them from falling into uninfluential groups, which is a well-contextualized point. While some generalizations are made regarding how children's passions are crafted, the ideas are sufficiently developed and relevant to the task. The response earns a Band 7 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from an introduction to working people, young adults, children, and finally a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'With reference to young adults', 'Contrary to the above two categories', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical or heavy-handed, such as 'An opinion will be formed in this essay regarding the aspect of pursuing a hobby by the different age groups', which is a somewhat unnatural introductory sentence. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, earning a solid Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate and at times sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'mental well-being', 'livelihood', 'self assessment', and 'uninfluential groups'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'me time' and 'chill time' (which are too informal for IELTS writing), 'do travel' instead of 'travel', and 'crafted by the help of their parent' instead of 'fostered' or 'guided'. Spelling is generally accurate, but vocabulary choice limits the score to a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as 'A hobby like sports, cycling, hiking, and running helps young adults to remain physically active and healthy.' However, some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist, such as 'all age group of people' instead of 'all age groups of people', 'involved into their hobby' instead of 'involved in', and 'how children outperform in activities' where the structure is slightly clumsy. Punctuation is generally sound, supporting a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance.
