Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, everyone wants to have a hobby that can benefit them, and it is argued that all age groups should also have one. I believe this can be beneficial for their health, and I will provide reasons to support my opinion in the following paragraphs.

Youngsters and children should be accustomed to going outside to play sports as their hobby. This is because engaging in physical sports activity can increase endurance and stamina. Moreover, this habit can also be useful in improving confidence as well as communication skills. For example, playing team sports, such as soccer or cricket, requires cooperating and communicating between players to win the game. Consequently, this can enhance cooperation skills that can be beneficial for them in every aspect of life, ranging from talking to a stranger to working in a team at the workplace.

Moving forward to working professionals and senior citizens, these particular groups should also make a hobby of visiting outdoors for physical activity. Since they are quite busy in their daily schedules - office work and housework- they are left with limited opportunities to perform physical exercise frequently. This trend further leads them towards chronic diseases, such as obesity or overweight. As a result, it can become a pressing issue for healthcare systems to treat them precisely. Therefore, given that they make a hobby of exercising often, they are less likely to have such health issues, which inevitably reduces the burden on health centers.

In conclusion, although all age groups have distinctive priorities in daily life, I believe they should at least have a hobby of going outside, either playing or exercising. This hobby is certainly advantageous for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing the importance of hobbies across different age groups, specifically focusing on youth and older working/retired populations. You present a clear position from the introduction through to the conclusion, supporting your ideas with relevant explanations and examples, such as team sports like soccer or cricket for children and physical activity to prevent chronic diseases for adults. The ideas are generally well extended, though the discussion for senior citizens leans slightly towards general health advice rather than exclusively focusing on hobbies. Nonetheless, the task is successfully and thoroughly covered, matching the criteria for a solid Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from an introduction to body paragraphs addressing different demographics, and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices are used effectively to link ideas, such as 'Consequently', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct points. While paragraph transitions like 'Moving forward to working professionals' are slightly conversational, the logical flow remains easy to follow and transparent, securing a strong Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, using less common items such as 'endurance and stamina', 'chronic diseases', and 'healthcare systems'. There is a reasonable attempt to use appropriate style and collocation throughout the essay. However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward phrasings, such as 'make a hobby of visiting outdoors' rather than 'take up outdoor hobbies' or 'spend time outdoors'. Spelling and word choices remain largely accurate and do not impede communication, placing this response firmly in the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and participial clauses such as 'Consequently, this can enhance cooperation skills that can be beneficial...' and 'Given that they make a hobby of exercising often, they are less likely...'. You maintain good control of grammar and punctuation overall, with frequent error-free sentences. While there are minor awkward structures—such as 'obesity or overweight' instead of 'obesity and being overweight'—these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, justifying a Band 7.0 score.
