Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing the importance of hobbies for children, young adults, working people, and the retired. The candidate establishes a clear position from the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay. Each demographic is given specific attention with relevant arguments and examples, such as mentioning reading for children, photography as a career for young adults, cooking for working people, and gardening for older citizens. While some of the supporting explanations are slightly repetitive or brief, the overall development satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.0 or solid Band 6.5. Ideas are extended, but a greater depth of analysis would push the response into higher band levels. Overall, the prompt is fully addressed with clear, relevant ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear overall progression and is divided into logical paragraphs that each address a different segment of the population mentioned in the prompt. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'For example,' 'therefore,' and 'To conclude.' However, some cohesion feels mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally faulty, such as 'they less eat ought to busy lifestyle' and minor issues with pronoun clarity. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas together. The logical flow is generally easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.5 descriptor where organization is coherent overall despite some minor mechanical use of cohesive ties.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, incorporating words and phrases like 'contemporary era,' 'insufficient time,' and 'engredients.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'excitemment,' 'happines,' 'lonliness,' 'unseperable,' 'grammer,' 'acedemic,' 'demamded,' 'enjoyement,' 'benefited,' and 'copanion.' Furthermore, some collocations are awkward, such as 'if someone adapt a hobby.' While the lexical range is adequate to convey meaning and communicate ideas clearly, the frequency of spelling and morphological errors prevents the score from reaching a Band 7.0, fitting comfortably within the Band 6.0 criteria.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'if their parents support them' and 'if they have hobby such as gardening'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement ('Hobbies brings,' 'hobbies plays'), missing articles ('in children life,' 'have hobby'), and awkward prepositional usage or word forms ('if one opt hobby'). While these errors do not impede overall communication—the meaning of the sentences remains clear—they occur frequently enough to preclude a higher band. The control of grammar aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor, where a mix of structures is used alongside persistent errors.
