Student answer (Band 7.0)
I strongly believe that everyone, irrespective of their age, gender, and profession, must include at least one hobby in their daily routine. Hobbies not only act as a stress buster, but many a time they also become a source of income and recognition. Today, all of us are living in a fast-moving world where we are struggling to strike a balance between our professional and personal lives. This fight to maintain a balance is becoming a cause of stress, inviting diseases simultaneously. Moreover, stress and diseases are not age-bound today. Anyone from 6 years old to 60 years old can suffer from stress and anxiety of one type or another. Thus, it becomes important that a person should look for an option where they can engage themselves to overcome and fight stress. Therefore, having a hobby of any kind helps people to get engaged mentally and physically, ensuring that they can overcome the situations responsible for stress. One of my colleagues, who really had a tough time in office due to office politics, found solace in cooking and gardening. This not only helped him to overcome the mental torture which he underwent at the office, but he also started teaching cooking to bachelors, so that they can cook healthy food by themselves rather than depending on unhealthy street foods for survival. In addition to this, many a time hobbies can also become a source of inspiration to the extent that people try to master it seriously and later convert the same hobby into a source of income. I remember that one of my friends wanted to learn guitar as he simply wanted to engage himself during the weekends. He joined the beginner guitar classes nearby. Eventually, he got so obsessed with learning the guitar that he took it as a challenge. Today, after mastering the guitar for almost two years, he currently owns a YouTube channel having 20,000 plus subscribers. Additionally, he also left his low-paying job and decided to become a guitar teacher. Thus, learning a guitar, which started just as a hobby, became a source of income for him too. Furthermore, he earned respect and recognition at the same time.
To conclude, it is not wrong to say that everyone should have at least one hobby to their credit. Having a hobby of any type, be it cooking, dancing, or gardening, keeps a person actively engaged, both mentally and physically. This helps them to deal with the tough phases of their lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task prompt, discussing why having a hobby is important across various life stages, including children, working adults, and retirees. The student takes a clear, well-developed position throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant and convincing personal examples, such as the colleague who found solace in cooking and gardening, and the friend who turned guitar playing into a successful YouTube channel. The arguments are logical, persuasive, and directly answer the prompt without any wandering off-topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
Ideas are logically sequenced, and there is a clear progression throughout the essay. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Thus', 'In addition to this', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link ideas and paragraphs, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical at times. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, two well-developed body paragraphs with distinct examples, and a concise conclusion. Referencing is clear throughout, and the overall structural flow supports the reader's comprehension effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient to wide range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision. Less common lexical items are used appropriately, such as 'irrespective', 'stress buster', 'solace', and 'obsessed'. There is a clear awareness of collocation and style, evident in phrases like 'strike a balance' and 'source of income and recognition'. Occasional minor word choice inaccuracies exist, such as 'learning a guitar' instead of 'learning the guitar' in one instance, but these do not impede communication in any way.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The writer uses a wide variety of complex sentence structures with good control, including conditional clauses, relative clauses, and participial phrases (e.g., 'Anyone from 6 years old to 60 years old can suffer from stress...', 'Today, after mastering the guitar...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, demonstrating a solid grasp of grammar and punctuation. Only very occasional minor errors occur, such as article usage ('learning a guitar'), but these are rare slips that do not affect the overall high standard of grammatical accuracy.
