Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the importance of hobbies across different age groups, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are generally relevant, covering how hobbies help utilize spare time and relieve stress. However, some arguments lack full extension. For instance, the example about the retirement home survey is introduced to show how knitting helps earn money, but this point is not fully tied back to why having a hobby is important for all life stages. Similarly, the reference to 'The Moscow Time' is somewhat generalized. This places the response comfortably in Band 6.0, as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, though some are slightly under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Further strengthening the views', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the text, although some feel slightly mechanical or formulaic. Referencing and substitution are generally clear, as seen in 'They can use extra time to make it more interesting'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. Overall, the organization is logical, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor where cohesion is sometimes mechanical, but the overall progression remains clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'predominant', 'explicate', and 'inner satisfaction'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'strees-free', 'earing' instead of 'earning', 'maintan', 'at lest', and 'wounderful'. Furthermore, some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'grey-haired masses'. These vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5 because the frequency of errors prevents it from sustaining a stable Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation issues that recur. For example, fragment sentences occur, such as 'The predominant one is it is a wonderful way...' and 'In other words, they consider that if they do some activities during their leisure time. It provides them inner staisfaction...', where a full stop incorrectly breaks a dependent clause. Preposition and article errors also appear ('in life', 'have hobby'). Because these errors occasionally cause minor confusion and disrupt the flow, the writing fits the Band 5.5 profile, showing a limited control of complex structures with frequent errors.
