Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people think that it is necessary for everyone to having at least one hobby in life. I strongly agree with this statement because it engages people to socialise, improve creativity or stay physically active.

To begin with, many people generally associate hobby with any sports, either it is watching or playing. For children it starts with playing those games with their friends and as they grow playing slowly starts converting into watching due to growth of body. For example, soccer is very popular sports around the world, many kids start playing when they are young and enjoy during teenage and adulthood. But as they grow older they prefer watching them at stadium or on television. Another important aspect of hobby is socialisation, people do associate having their prefered team of sports with whom they connect. For instance, a person supporting a specific football team would engage with others as a fan of that team and would also share knowledge about their team history and gameplay. In this case, even age group does not matter, anyone can prefer to associate themself with a sports team.

Secondly, getting involved in some activity improves creativity and cognitive mind. Some people like to do painting, art and craft during their free time, which overall enhances creative mindset in all other work they do. For instance, a person likes to do origami, can make a lot of varities of paper craft and it does reflect their beautiful mindset. With such creative mind, they can easily solve many problems even at work and provide them logical support to think something out of box that enhances their performance. Sometime people who do not have any hobby are seen lonely and mentally sick, as without any enagagement with anything affects mental well-being. During free time if someone does not perform any activity would break their ideas about doing something productive and could leave them in the state of depression.

In conclusion, having a hobby is a beautiful thing a person can have regardless of their age and career. Being associated with anything makes them open to socialise and improve their state of mind.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position in the introduction agreeing with the importance of hobbies for people across different life stages. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as discussing sports for children and teenagers, and origami to enhance creativity and problem-solving skills for working adults. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise slightly in places, and some arguments regarding retired people are only implied rather than fully developed across all four mentioned age groups. Overall, the prompt is well-covered with a clear, sustained position throughout, aligning comfortably with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each main paragraph is introduced with a helpful signposting phrase, such as 'To begin with' and 'Secondly', followed by a concluding paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct main ideas. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, though there are some slight mechanical usages and repetitive referencing, such as the frequent reliance on 'for instance' and 'as they grow'. Nevertheless, the overarching structure flows smoothly, and the relationship between ideas remains clear to the reader, securing a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'socialisation', 'cognitive mind', and 'mindset'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'everyone to having' (instead of have), 'associate hobby with any sports' (instead of hobbies with sports), and 'mentally sick' (instead of mentally unwell). Spelling is generally accurate, but occasional errors in word formation, like 'varities' and 'enagagement', occur. While communication is never impeded, these lexical inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching higher band levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and preposition usage, such as 'everyone to having', 'grow playing slowly starts converting', and 'without any enagagement with anything affects'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but sentence structures can occasionally be awkward or run-on, requiring the reader to re-read to grasp the exact meaning. Because errors occur consistently alongside a mix of simple and complex sentences, this fits the Band 6 profile well.
