Student answer (Band 6.0)

In my opinion everyone should have at least one hobby. It will help people to have a moment of happiness and to get rid of all the tensions and worries they're facing in their lifes.

Hobbies have different effects on differnt age groups. For children, having a hobby will help in the growth of mind and body. For example, painting will grow their mind in artistic way and also enhance the control over hand movements.

Young adults and working people face different challenges in their life. Some struggle in professional life whereas some in personal life. Hobbies will help them to forget all the life problems and enjoy the moment. For example, my uncle always cook on saturday night for his family because cooking is his hobby.

For retired person, it would be dangerous if someone just sit idle and do nothing. It will make them feel their life as useless. That's why having a hobby is very important in this age group. When my father retired, he started gardening which he always wanted to do and it makes him happy. He always seems very busy in different things related to gardening and also it helps us to enjoy different types of naturally grown vegetables and fruits.

In the end, I would say having a hobby is very important and if someone got their hobby as their professions it's blessing. I have seen some people whose hobby was cooking and they eventually become cook. When a person have hooby as profession, they give their full effort and become the best in their work. Like myself as a software developer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing the importance of hobbies across all four requested life stages: children, young adults, working people, and the retired. The position is clear throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with relevant, personal examples, such as your uncle cooking on Saturday nights and your father starting gardening. However, some arguments remain slightly under-developed and tend to over-generalise, such as the brief conclusion about turning hobbies into professions. Overall, the ideas are well-supported, earning a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0 for addressing all task requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation, using paragraphing effectively to discuss each age group separately. Progression is evident from children through to retired people and finally a personal conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For children', 'For example', and 'That's why', though some transitions are a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but there are minor issues with paragraph links. Overall, the essay flows quite well and maintains a coherent overall arrangement that supports readability throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying meaning with terms such as 'tensions and worries', 'growth of mind and body', and 'sit idle'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('lifes' instead of 'lives', 'differnt' instead of 'different', 'cook' instead of 'cooks', 'hooby' instead of 'hobby') and occasional awkward phrasing like 'if someone got their hobby as their professions'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in word choice and spelling prevent the score from reaching higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'if someone just sit idle'). There are several grammatical errors and slips, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('When a person have hooby') and missing articles ('as software developer'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but minor errors persist. These errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument easily, which places the grammar firmly at a Band 6.0 level.
