Student answer (Band 7.0)
In this cutting-edge era, individuals are increasingly inclined to focus on their work, financial responsibilities and personal lives, whether they are children, teenagers, professionals or older people. It is argued that having a passion or a hobby at every stage of life is crucial for remaining productive. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that having a hobby is an excellent way to become more creative, confident and productive, as it gives people a sense of purpose and helps them maintain a healthy work-life balance across different generations.
To begin with, having a hobby can significantly improve people's mental well-being. Modern life can be demanding, particularly for students and working adults who have to deal with academic pressure, deadlines and various responsibilities. Engaging in an enjoyable activity such as painting, reading, gardening or playing a musical instrument allows people to take a break from their daily routine and relax their minds. For instance, a person who spends several hours working on a computer may feel considerably less stressed after spending some time gardening or listening to music in the evening.
Furthermore, hobbies can help people develop valuable skills and maintain social connections. Children can learn creativity and patience through activities such as drawing or sports, while young adults can develop communication and teamwork skills by participating in clubs or group activities. Similarly, retired people can use hobbies to remain physically and socially active after leaving the workforce. For example, joining a walking group or a gardening club can give retired individuals an opportunity to meet new people and maintain an active lifestyle.
In addition, hobbies can make people's lives more enjoyable and give them a sense of personal achievement. Unlike work or academic activities, hobbies are usually chosen according to personal interests, which means that people can pursue them simply for pleasure. This can contribute to greater satisfaction in everyday life.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that everyone should have at least one hobby, regardless of their age or occupation. Hobbies not only help people relax and maintain their mental well-being but also provide opportunities to learn new skills, stay socially connected and enjoy lif

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student addresses all parts of the task thoroughly and presents a clear, well-developed position throughout the essay. The introduction establishes a strong stance that hobbies are beneficial across all life stages, and this position is maintained consistently. Main body paragraphs are dedicated to exploring different age groups and benefits, such as mental well-being for students and workers, and social connections for children and retired individuals. Ideas are well-extended with relevant examples, such as gardening, listening to music, and joining walking groups. This fulfills the Band 7 and touches upon Band 8 descriptors due to the thorough development of ideas across the various demographics mentioned in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect (mental well-being, skill development and social connections, personal achievement). The student uses a variety of cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition'. Referencing is clear throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily. The overall arrangement of information is coherent and displays good control of organizational features, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision, successfully using less common lexical items such as 'cutting-edge era', 'mental well-being', 'academic pressure', and 'socially active'. Word choices and collocations are generally accurate and appropriate for the context (e.g., 'maintain a healthy work-life balance', 'personal achievement'). Although there is a minor truncation at the very end of the essay ('enjoy lif'), the overall lexical range allows the writer to convey precise meanings smoothly. The performance comfortably sits at a Band 7 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The response features a wide variety of complex sentence structures used accurately. Examples include conditional and participial integration, such as 'Engaging in an enjoyable activity such as painting... allows people to take a break' and 'Children can learn creativity and patience through activities such as drawing or sports, while young adults can develop...'. There is a high frequency of error-free sentences, and the grammar and punctuation are tightly controlled throughout the body paragraphs. The grammatical control demonstrated is robust, making Band 8 a fitting score for this criterion.
