Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is crucial for people to have at least one hobby, irrrespective of their age and employment status. I firmly agree on this, as having a hobby makes people more active and healthy. Furthermore, it helps in boost the energy and creativity of the people.

Primarily, people who have some sort of hobbies are usually engaged in various task which they enjoy doing. They usually do some activities which refresh them and helps to keep their mental health well. During the ideal time people can focus on their hobby which eventually helps to maintain their overall health. For instance, a children or even adults play games like football, cricket, etc. which help them to utilize their free time and in return they become fresh and healthy as they enjoy what they are doing. It helps to release the happy hormones and reduce the stress hormones.

Aditionally, when people are perfoming the activities with their own will, they usually feel the surge in energy and their creativity also reaches to peak. It is because while practising a hobby, individuals do not have any stress or judgements, they do those tasks just for fun. Hence, they perform well on those activities. Fo examples, a person working for all the weekdays might be having a rough time in this employment but on weekends when he/she is performing her favourite hobby performs really well as he forgets all the worries about life and enjoys what he is doing at the moment. Also, retired people perform their everyday task with a boring way but when it comes to hobby they will give their best due to their increased energy and creativity for their hobby.

In conclusion, people perform their hobby with their own consent which helps them to become more active, healthy and creative. Hence, its indeniable that everyone should have at least a hobby in their life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student addresses all parts of the prompt, agreeing with the statement that people of all ages and statuses need a hobby and providing supporting reasons. The position is clear throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, discussing how hobbies improve mental health, reduce stress hormones, and boost energy and creativity. Examples are provided, such as playing football or cricket for children and adults, and weekend relaxation for working people. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise slightly and some arguments become a bit repetitive, which aligns the response with the Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are presented coherently with an introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal relationships between ideas, such as 'Primarily', 'Aditionally' (spelled 'Additionally'), 'For instance', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points regarding health and energy. However, referencing and cohesive links are sometimes a bit mechanical, and minor spelling slips in transitional markers (e.g. 'Aditionally' instead of 'Additionally') prevent the writing from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and collocations such as 'employment status', 'mental health well', 'happy hormones', and 'stress hormones'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'helps in boost' (should be 'helps to boost' or 'helps in boosting'), 'perfoming' (spelling error), 'perform their everyday task with a boring way' (awkward phrasing), and 'indeniable' (spelling error). These lexical inaccuracies and occasional spelling mistakes indicate a Band 6 level of control, as communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent command of grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'Furthermore, it helps in boost the energy and creativity of the people' and 'when people are perfoming the activities with their own will, they usually feel the surge in energy'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in articles, prepositions, and verb forms, such as 'irrrespective of their age', 'a children or even adults play' (plural/singular mismatch), 'tasks' versus 'task', and punctuation issues. Because these errors persist throughout and affect sentence accuracy, the response sits comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.
