Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the importance of hobbies across various life stages, presenting a clear position throughout. The writer notes that hobbies are vital for overall growth, social connections, and well-being. However, some ideas are underdeveloped or repetitive. For instance, the paragraph discussing social connections mentions joining clubs and meeting people, but the supporting examples remain somewhat general and lack specific depth. While the writer covers the prompt's premise regarding children, adults, and the retired by mentioning age groups and day-to-day life, the development tends to rely on sweeping generalisations rather than fully extended arguments. These limitations place the response comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor, where all parts of the task are addressed, but some areas lack thorough development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion appropriately. However, the logical progression is occasionally hindered by faulty cohesive devices and referencing issues. For example, the transitional phrase 'Due to the fact that an individual would get...' results in a fragmented sentence structure that disrupts the flow. Additionally, referencing pronouns like 'that' or 'they' can be ambiguous, such as in the sentence 'By getting involved with that the have the freedom...'. Paragraph transitions are attempted, but mechanical errors in linking words and punctuation slightly undermine the overall readability, aligning the response with a Band 6 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'therapeutic experience', 'paramount importance', and 'resoned conclusion' (though misspelled). There are frequent word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'aleast', 'mantain', 'membership pf', 'differ' instead of 'differ', and 'essiential'. Despite these noticeable inaccuracies, the meaning remains clear and communication is not impeded. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the writer's basic arguments and opinions, corresponding to the criteria outlined for Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition in sentence structure. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('Hobbies plays', 'These is very essential', 'hobbies plays') and sentence fragments (e.g., starting clauses with 'Due to the fact that' without a main clause). Punctuation and article usage also show persistent issues. While the errors are frequent, they rarely impede overall communication, as the reader can still grasp the intended meaning. This balance of mixed structures and regular non-systematic errors places the performance at a Band 5.5 or Band 6; given the overall clarity despite structural flaws, a 5.5 is well-justified.
