Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate addresses all parts of the prompt, expressing a clear and consistent position that having a hobby is crucial at every stage of life. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as students dealing with the pressure of studies through sports or cycling. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or general, such as the brief mentions of meeting people from other cultures. The response successfully covers the prompt's reference to different life stages, including students and older people. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.5, but rounded to 6.0 for limited depth in extension.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different supporting ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'The first and foremost reason', 'For instance', and 'To sum up'. However, some referencing and linking are a bit mechanical, and cohesive devices are sometimes faulty, as seen in awkward phrasing like 'Another reason to agree that having hobby is so important that it can help...'. Progression is generally clear, but paragraph transitions could be smoother. This corresponds to a Band 6.0 performance.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and collocations such as 'perform well', 'reduce stress', and 'different perspective'. However, there are noticeable word-choice errors and spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'on' instead of 'one' ('at least on hobby'), 'lots or burden' instead of 'lot of burden', 'weather' instead of 'whether', and 'peroson' instead of 'person'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts complex structures, such as 'In this tense situation, if they do something related to their hobby like playing sports... can reduce stress and helps them to focus...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, articles, and clause structures, such as 'go for swimming' instead of 'go swimming', 'if someone have' instead of 'has', and missing articles ('a hobby to go out and exploring'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they demonstrate inconsistent control of grammar, placing this response securely at Band 6.0.
