Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is often argued that people of different age, from children to retirees should atleast have one hobby. I strongly agree with this view because having a hobby provide an important balance to everyday life. It also help develop skills, maintain social relations and keep mental and physical health in check.
For children and young adults having a hobby can help them in their personal development. Activities such as playing a sport, learning a musical instrument allows young people to develop creativity, discipline and teamwork. Unlike education in school they learn skills by having fun and on thier own pace. For instance a child who plays a team sport would learn to how to cooperate with others, have discipline at practising regularly.
Hobies are equally important for working people as they have busy work schedule and immense day to day responsibilities. Having a hobby can provide them the much needed break and prevent them from getting fully consumed by their professional life. For example being a part of a photography club can give them a break, they can learn a new skill and also meet people outside of their work environment .
For retired people hobbies can be essentially important as they provide structure and purpose after leaving employment. Some people might feel isolated, lonely and feel that their daily life has become meaningless. Hobbies such as gardening, cooking, reading and volunteering can help them mentally and socially. For example retired people joining a gardening club can enjoy a regular skill and get social with other members of the society.
In conclusion having a hobby helps everyone at every stage of life. It support development in children, gives a much needed balance between work and social life to working people and provides a structure and purpose to retired people day to day life. Therefor people should be encouraged to maintain atleast one activity they deeply enjoy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why having a hobby is important for all four mentioned age groups: children, young adults, working people, and retirees. A clear position is established in the introduction ('I strongly agree with this view') and maintained throughout the essay. Each body paragraph explores a specific demographic, providing relevant reasons and concrete examples, such as photography clubs for workers and gardening clubs for retirees. The ideas are well-developed and extended appropriately without straying off-topic. The response meets all task requirements successfully, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the prompt and delivering a persuasive, coherent argument supported by logical examples from everyday knowledge.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured logically, with each paragraph dedicated to a specific life stage mentioned in the prompt. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas, such as children in the second paragraph, working adults in the third, and retired people in the fourth. Cohesive devices are employed adequately to guide the reader, using transitions such as 'For instance', 'For example', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitional links could occasionally be smoother to achieve a higher band, as some sentences within paragraphs feel slightly disjointed. Overall, the structural progression is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient vocabulary range to allow flexibility and precision in discussing general topics. Less common items such as 'personal development', 'professional life', and 'essentially important' are attempted with a reasonable awareness of style and collocation. However, there are some minor word-choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'atleast' instead of 'at least', 'thier' instead of 'their', 'Hobies' instead of 'Hobbies', and 'get social' instead of 'socialise'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is adequate for the task, and the intended meaning is communicated clearly without causing confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are frequent error-free sentences, particularly in expressing general truths and opinions, such as 'Having a hobby can provide them the much needed break and prevent them from getting fully consumed by their professional life.' Nevertheless, several grammatical and punctuation errors persist, including missing plural forms ('different age' instead of 'different ages'), subject-verb agreement issues ('having a hobby provide' and 'It also help'), and missing commas before dependent clauses. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily.
