Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays people from different generation, children to older are busy in their hectic schedules wether dealing with their workloads or maintaining their health. However, it is undeniable that invovling themselves in other leisure activities apart from their everyday commitments is very crucial. In my viewpoint, I believe having atleast a single interest in one skill or activity is necessary for mental health development as well as personal growth and socialisation.

To begin with, having interest in one hobby is very advatageous for not only mental health but also helps in physical development to all generation. To be specific, children and younger generation have a massive academic and professional pressure. Ultimately, indulging in pleasurable activities mitigates stress and anxiety. In terms of elderly generation, aged people coping with lonliness and physical diasbility have a significant negative impact on their mind. If they are encouraged to enhance their skills in particular hobby will foster mental ease and development.

Furthermore, individuals having keen interest in leisure activities not just stimulate mental relief but are essential for personal development and social connection too. They provide opportunity to enhance their skills, improve self-confidence through practice. In addition to this, outside their working life and studies, develop bond through socializing with others through their hobbies. For instance, in acadamic area, along with the studies school organises an extracurricular activities for students such as sports, crafts, entertainment activity to showcase their interest and be the best in it.

In conclusion, hobbies play essential role in lowering stress levels of all generations thereby boosting their health mentaly and physically. Additionally, it is a high impact tool to maintain your social life alive.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position on the importance of hobbies across different age groups, including children, working adults, and the retired. The writer develops relevant ideas, such as mitigating academic stress for younger generations and coping with loneliness for the elderly, as seen in the examples provided about school extracurricular activities. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed and tend to over-generalise, preventing the response from achieving a higher band. To elevate the task response, the writer should provide more extended, concrete explanations rather than moving quickly between points, ensuring every argument is fully explored with specific evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical organisation, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing mental and physical benefits, personal development, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct main ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the use of 'Additionally' and 'In addition to this'. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to ensure that cohesive relationships between sentences are smoother and that referencing is consistently clear, avoiding any slight choppiness in sentence transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'mitigates stress', 'extracurricular activities', and 'socialisation'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'wether' instead of 'whether', 'invovling', 'advatageous', 'diasbility', 'lonliness', and 'acadamic'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight a limited precision in lexical control. To improve this score, the writer needs to demonstrate greater accuracy in spelling and collocations, while expanding the use of precise, natural phrasing to convey ideas smoothly without repetitive vocabulary slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as participial phrases ('indulging in pleasurable activities mitigates stress') and conditional clauses ('If they are encouraged...'). However, the writing contains frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'children to older are busy', 'to all generation', and 'maintain your social life alive', which can cause some difficulty for the reader. While communication is not severely hindered, the control over complex structures is inconsistent. To achieve a higher band, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences and ensure accurate agreement, preposition use, and clause structuring across more ambitious grammatical patterns.
