Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely believed that free-time activities plays an important role in individual's life. I largely agree with this perspective as hobbies help to reduce stress and lonliness, making this viewpoint particularly convincing.

The foremost reason for my position is that, there are several advantages of persuing hobbies. One of the most significant benefit is that leisure activities assist people to decrease mental health problems. In recent years, depression has become a considerable concern in modern society. Keeping ourself busy in favourite activities improve depression to some extent by distracting individuals from over-thinking. A good example of this can be seen in school childern and young adults, after school they don't get bored, if they have something intersting to do. In addition, this can lead a positive impact on their development. As a result, they would able to become more creative in the future.

Another compelling argument is that, people those are doing full-time jobs can easily get tired from their hectic schedules. These recreational activities provide them a quality of time to spend with themselves, and they got a chance to find best version of them. A clear illustration of this can be seen in retired people whose are living in nursing homes, some of them doing knitting, painting to distract themselves from lonliness. Consequently, Geriatrics does not feel bore and isolated at the later stage of their life.

In conclusion, I firmly convinced that, I largely agree with this statement as improving stress and lonliness, both of which can have a positive impact on everybody's life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position agreeing with the importance of hobbies across different age groups. The ideas presented are generally relevant, such as reducing stress and loneliness for working people and the retired, which fully satisfies the requirements for the mid-band level. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or lack extension. For instance, the mention of school children and young adults only briefly touches upon creativity without providing a concrete, fully expanded example. To reach the next level, the writer needs to ensure that every main idea is thoroughly supported with more robust and fully articulated explanations and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from children to working adults and the elderly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different stages of life, and basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Consequently' are employed to connect thoughts. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical and referencing is not always completely clear, such as in the phrase 'whose are living in nursing homes'. To achieve a higher band, the writer should aim for more seamless and varied transitions between sentences and paragraphs, ensuring that cohesive devices are used with greater flexibility and naturalness.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'recreational activities', 'isolated', and 'hectic schedules'. Communication is not impeded by word choice, fulfilling the criteria for this band. Nevertheless, there are noticeable spelling and word-form errors throughout the text, including 'lonliness' instead of loneliness, 'persuing' instead of pursuing, 'childern' instead of children, and 'intersting' instead of interesting. To move up to a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical control, improve accuracy in spelling, and demonstrate a more precise use of collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures like conditional and relative clauses. There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('free-time activities plays', 'Geriatrics does not feel bore') and awkward relative pronoun usage ('people those are doing', 'whose are living'). While these errors occur, they rarely impede communication, placing the grammar comfortably within this band. To reach higher proficiency, the writer needs to reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips, improve control over complex clause structures, and ensure accurate verb forms and agreement throughout.
