Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often said that hobby can play a vital role in the younger generation, teenagers, working professionals and the retired people. While this trend offers certain disbeliefs, I firmly believe that hobbies should be implemented for a better lifestyle. There are several reasons which are discussed in the following paragraphs.

One of the main reasons is that hobbies can be useful in maitaining a healthy lifestyle. For instance, if children play sports after school hours, this could keep them physically fit. Furthermore, it is also an important factor for the working professionals and the elderly people to spare some time and adopt at least one hobby. For example, if an old person goes for a morning walk on daily basis, it would be helpful in staying fit. The working employees should devote their time in doing some exercises or reading books, after participating in such things, this could significantly reduce the stress level and also helps out in the time of depression.

Subsequently, it could also helps enhancing personal growth and development. To illustrate, my elder brother started playing a keyboard alongside the academics, and recently he has started his career in the music industry and also organising shows. However, it can be stressful to decide which hobby to choose at first, but looking after the right one can improve the standard of living.

To conclude, it is crucial to look after hobbies, this can help individuals know themselves better, and also can improve the overall lifestyle. Therefore, people should always aim to achieve extra curricular activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the significance of hobbies across different age groups, including children, teenagers, working adults, and retired individuals, and clearly states an overall position supporting their implementation. The ideas presented are generally relevant, covering benefits such as physical fitness and stress relief. However, some areas show signs of under-development. For instance, the mention of how hobbies help 'in the time of depression' or how they lead to personal growth is introduced briefly without substantial extension or specific real-world exploration, leaning on a singular brief example about an elder brother. To reach the next level, the writer needs to fully develop all main ideas with deeper explanations and more comprehensive supporting details rather than moving rapidly between points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, demonstrating an awareness of paragraphing structure. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving from the general introduction to physical health benefits and personal growth in subsequent paragraphs. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, such as 'For instance,' 'Furthermore,' and 'To illustrate.' However, some cohesion feels mechanical or slightly repetitive, and certain transitions—like starting the third paragraph with 'Subsequently, it could also helps enhancing'—disrupt the natural flow. Referencing is occasionally slightly loose, and paragraphs could benefit from smoother logical progression and more sophisticated internal transitions to truly command higher band standards.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer displays an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for completing the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'professionals,' 'extracurricular,' and 'significantly.' However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing throughout the text. Expressions such as 'offers certain disbeliefs' (likely intended to mean doubts or counterarguments), 'maitaining' (spelling error), 'on daily basis,' 'participating in such things,' and 'looking after the right one' (instead of finding or choosing the right one) demonstrate a lack of precision. While these minor slips and vocabulary choices do not entirely impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score by showing frequent minor inaccuracies and a limited control of natural collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response utilizes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at conditional structures and relative clauses, such as 'if children play sports after school hours, this could keep them physically fit.' There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward structural patterns present. Instances such as 'it could also helps enhancing' (mixing modal verb patterns with gerunds incorrectly), missing articles in phrases like 'alongside the academics,' and prepositional slips like 'devote their time in doing' rather than 'to doing' reflect a moderate level of accuracy. Punctuation is generally functional, but the recurring grammatical lapses across verb forms and pattern structures mean errors persist, placing the grammar performance firmly at this level.
