Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing the importance of hobbies across different age groups, from children to senior citizens, and clearly states an opinion in agreement with the prompt. The writer extends ideas with relevant examples, such as mentioning how reading helps children's academic performance and how using cellphones gives senior citizens confidence and eases daily life. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the explanation of office employees focuses more on general skills and promotions rather than specifically on hobbies, and the personal example involving artificial intelligence is somewhat convoluted and lacks clear integration with the main argument. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to ensure that every main idea is fully explored and directly tied back to the concept of hobbies with consistent depth throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, successfully guiding the reader through the writer's perspective on hobbies across various demographics. The writer attempts to sequence ideas using transitional markers such as "Firstly", "Secondly", and "Third". However, cohesion is frequently mechanical and sometimes faulty, with run-on sentences and a lack of clear referencing that disrupts the logical flow. Paragraphing is also problematic, as the entire second half of the text and the personal example are lumped together into a single, overly dense block rather than being divided into logical thematic paragraphs. To achieve a higher standard, the writer must employ a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices, maintain consistent referencing, and structure the essay into clear, distinct paragraphs with a discernible progression of thought.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as "academic performance", "career selections", and "habit tracker". However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors throughout the text, including "Nowdays", "peole", "employee" instead of employees, "developed" instead of develop, "habbits", "havinf", "disicipline", "demonstarte", and "practiuce". While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the response to this level. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to demonstrate greater control over word choice, word formation, and spelling, while expanding the use of precise vocabulary and natural collocations without making frequent mechanical slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on long, run-on clauses linked by coordinating conjunctions or commas rather than proper terminal punctuation. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as "habbit make", "skill gave", "senior people have difficulty to learn", and "the us become it habbit". Punctuation is also weak, with commas incorrectly used to splice independent clauses. Despite these frequent errors, the meaning remains mostly discernible to the reader. To progress to a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures, improve control over basic grammatical agreements, and use correct punctuation to demarcate sentences clearly.
