Student answer (Band 6.5)

Due to hectic schedule, everyone is busy in their work, study and other things. They do not have enough time for ownself. However, some individuals reckon that it is extremely essential to have minimum one hobby such as reading, watching tv, playing games and so on, even they are at any stage of age. In this essay, I will discuss this topic as well as my opinion along with relevant examples in forthcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, the most prominent point is personal and cognative development. To elaborate it, consistingof children and young adults, hobbies plays a pivotal role in development. Engagaing in activities such as playing a musical instrument, painting, or participating in team sports offers a constructive outlet for for creative expression and energy. Furthermore, in an era dominated by intense academic competition, hobbies act as a vital buffer against stress and anxiety. For instance, a young student who plays a football after school not only builds physical fitnes and learns teamwork, but also gets a necessory mental break from rigorous schoolwork.

Similarly, hobbies are indispensable for the working population and retired individuals. For working professionals, a hobby provides a definitive separation between their personal lives, helping to burnout. Engaging in non-work-related passion, like gardening and cooking, allows the mind to recuperate from the daily pressure of employment. For retires, transitioning out of the workforce can often lead to a sudden loss of purpose and feelings of isolation. For instance, a retired person joining a local chess club keeps their mind sharp while fulfilling their need for social interaction.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that having a hobby is essential for everyone, regardless of age.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by exploring the importance of hobbies across various age groups, from children to the retired. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay, supported by relevant examples such as a student playing football and a retired person joining a chess club. Ideas are generally well extended and supported, though there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as broad claims about the working population. To reach the next level, all ideas would need to be consistently thoroughly developed with even deeper insight into how hobbies impact different demographic groups.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, with appropriate paragraphing used to separate distinct life stages, such as children and adults. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably flexibly, seen in transitional phrases like 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'Similarly'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely seamless. To achieve a higher score, the transitions between paragraphs and sentences would need to demonstrate even greater subtlety and unobtrusive flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'pivotal role', 'indispensable', and 'recuperate'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors that prevent a higher score, including 'cognative' instead of 'cognitive', 'consistingof', 'Engagaing', 'fitnes', 'necessory', and 'retires' instead of 'retirees'. Additionally, the collocation 'helping to burnout' lacks a preposition or object to be fully accurate. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision and care with spelling and lexical forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures like conditional and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors present, such as 'Due to hectic schedule' missing a determiner, 'minimum one hobby' instead of 'at least one hobby', 'any stage of age' instead of 'any stage of life', and playing 'a football' instead of 'football'. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement are generally controlled well enough that meaning is rarely obscured. To progress further, the writer needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine prepositions and articles.
