Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by agreeing with the statement and attempting to discuss hobbies across different age groups, but the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. While the introduction briefly mentions 'people all ages including those who are working and retired', the body paragraphs focus broadly on creativity and relaxation without truly differentiating between children, young adults, working people, and retirees as requested by the prompt. Furthermore, the response falls short of the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 241 words. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to ensure every part of the prompt is fully explored with extended explanations and well-supported examples for all mentioned demographic groups, alongside meeting the required word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance established in the introduction and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct ideas, such as creativity in the second paragraph and relaxation in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, referencing and transitional links can be abrupt, and cohesive devices are occasionally over-used or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'This is because' and 'For example'. To progress to the next level, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother logical transitions between sentences and paragraphs, creating a clearer overall progression of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate for the task, providing enough vocabulary to discuss the general topic of hobbies. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'benefical', 'persue', 'eassy', 'totaly', 'relexed', 'enourage', 'experiment' (instead of experiments), 'potenial', 'improv', 'interst', 'somthing', 'enchances', 'crativness', 'activites', 'expess', 'enaged', and 'interovert'. These errors indicate an inadequate control of spelling and word formation. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, use less common lexical items with greater precision, and significantly improve accuracy in spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a limited range of structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that are often flawed. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, articles, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, which can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'people all ages' (missing preposition), 'having a hobby help people' (subject-verb agreement error), 'people who have interst in pottery are always try to make' (tense and verb form errors), and 'always have a relax mind' (adjective/noun form error). To move up to the next band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures and improve grammatical accuracy so that errors are less frequent and do not impede communication.
