Student answer (Band 6.0)

It looks imaginary, if someone says that he still has a hobby in the current time of hustle and bustle. Contrarily, I know someone in my social network, who is fond of gardening, and he is still keeping his hobby alive up to this day surprisingly. I can recall my youger era when we used to visit many local markets and nurseries to collect the seeds for specific plants or flowers like yellow rose and jasmine. I was not great admirer of his hobby, but I used to give him a hand in collecting all the stuff which he needed for gardening.

Recently, I visited his new house, which he bought couple of months ago, to wish him for his achievement. While making a tour of his house, the moment we entered his garden area, the beauty, multi-layers of the coloured flower made me bewildered. Undoubtedly, this was the best exhibition of his long lasting interest and experience. The glow in his eyes after looking at his garden amazed me.

Having this experience, i am compelled to say that every individual in the society must have one hobby, regardless of his age, genre, class and position. In these busy hours, we should spare some time for ourselves, because i makes us relaxed and skillful.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing an opinion on whether everyone should have a hobby, presenting a personal anecdote about a friend to support this view. However, the length requirement is NOT met, as the essay contains 214 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. While the ideas are relevant, the discussion tends to rely heavily on a single specific narrative about an acquaintance rather than fully exploring how hobbies benefit different demographic groups mentioned in the prompt, such as working people and the retired. Consequently, the development of ideas is limited and under-developed in places, presenting a partial response to all parts of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from introducing the friend's hobby to observing the garden and finally stating the writer's opinion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, the body description, and the concluding stance. Cohesive devices such as 'Contrarily', 'Recently', and 'Having this experience' are employed to link ideas, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. The lower band requirements are fully met, and the emerging logical structure hints at higher organisational skills, but occasional clunky transitions prevent a smoother flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'hustle and bustle', 'bewildered', and 'long lasting interest'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as writing 'youger era' instead of 'younger days', 'genre' instead of 'gender', and missing plural forms like 'couple of months ago' instead of 'a couple of months ago'. These lexical inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect typical limitations in precision and word form control at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'While making a tour of his house, the moment we entered...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('making a tour', 'in garden area'), capitalization errors ('i' instead of 'I'), and awkward prepositions or subject-verb agreement issues like 'it makes us relaxed' misspelled as 'i makes us relaxed'. These errors reflect a limited range of structures where attempts at complexity introduce frequent flaws, occasionally causing minor difficulty for the reader.
