Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is widely believed that age is just a number and a person can pursue their hobby at any time of their life. Many individuals think that everyone, from a little child to an old person should have one hobby. I agree upto a large extent with notion because it helps us to escape from our daily life and improve ourselves with time.
To begin with, a hobby which can be enjoyed in a leisure time helps a person to escape from their daily life. It provides them a reason to connect with themselves over time and find the inner spark of the creativity. The category of hobby also affects the person's health, for instance, doing painting provides mental calmness and relaxation to the mind. Hence, hobby can be a shortcut to escape from the regular life and find a deeper connection with themselves.
Moreover, one hobby can expose a individual to a variety of different experience and opportunities. It will help them to improve by learning different skills and broaden their perspective of life . For example, a hobby like travelling can provide knowledge of the place and experience of learning about cultures as well as traditions. It helps a person to be more independent and improves their decision making skills. Therefore, even a single hobby can let you have a wide range of experiences.
To conclude, having a single hobby is not only important for young children but also for adults and old age people because it provides an escape route from the ordinary life and helps in getting exposure of different experiences and learning new life skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why having a hobby is important across different age groups and clearly stating a personal position of agreement. The main ideas are generally relevant, but some are slightly under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the first body paragraph argues that hobbies provide an escape and mental calmness, mentioning painting as an example, but the explanation remains somewhat general rather than fully explored across different life stages like childhood or retirement. The second body paragraph covers personal growth and travel, but the progression toward the next band is hindered by a tendency to generalize rather than expanding deeply on how working people or the elderly specifically benefit. Overall, the ideas satisfy the requirements for a solid middle band, showing a clear stance throughout with adequate support, though deeper exploration of all demographic groups mentioned in the prompt would elevate the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. The writer uses cohesive devices reasonably well, such as introductory phrases like 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude', which guide the reader smoothly through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and the conclusion. However, referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive, and cohesive devices are sometimes a bit mechanical rather than entirely natural, which keeps the response at this level. To reach the next band, the writer could employ more sophisticated and varied cohesive referencing within paragraphs to make the flow even more seamless and unobtrusive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to communicate ideas with reasonable clarity. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'inner spark', 'mental calmness', and 'broaden their perspective', demonstrating an awareness of style. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, word form, and collocation, such as writing 'upto a large extent with notion' instead of 'up to a large extent with the notion', and 'a individual' instead of 'an individual'. Furthermore, phrases like 'old age people' are less natural than 'elderly people'. These lexical slips and minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, the writer should focus on precision in word choice, accurate articles with singular countable nouns, and mastering natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting some more intricate patterns. There are several error-free sentences, such as 'It provides them a reason to connect with themselves over time', showcasing an ability to form coherent clauses. However, there are some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('enjoyed in a leisure time'), minor preposition issues, and pluralisation errors ('different experience' instead of 'different experiences'). Despite these issues, the errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move towards higher bands, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure greater accuracy with articles and noun-form agreements.
