Student answer (Band 6.5)

Having atleast one hobby in different group of population whether it is an elderly, younger children or working individuals is significant as it has physical and psyhological benefits which will improve the quality of life.

Starting with my belief, possessing atleast one hobby such as doing any recreational activity such as singing, gardening is useful for elderly population. Such leisure activities not only enhances cognitive capacity but also boosts creativity and passion. As a result, elderly involved in such activities develop positive behaviour towards life. Similarly, working people pursuing team sports possess the skills such as leadership, teamwork which not improves the cohesive working environment but also improve the teamwork communication and boost productivity.

One more rationale to substantiate my crux is, younger children should particiapte in extracurrricular hobbies such as singing or dancing as it develops their character and boost their happiness. Rather than focusing whole day on curriculum, if schools implement and allot time for leisure activities. This will decrease student's overall mental fatigue and boost their academic growth. For instance, if children are subjected to academic as well as extracurricular activities in the school. This will not only help in character development but also improve their focus and concentration through cognitive games.

All in all, having atleast one hobby in different categories of population such as retirees, younger adults, juveniles and working people is very beneficial in personality development and improving other soft skills such as adaptibilty, resilience, teamwork collaboration which will be helpful while navigating throughout the life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by giving a clear position that having a hobby is beneficial across all age groups, satisfying the core prompt. Ideas are extended and supported, such as exploring the benefits of hobbies for the elderly in cognitive capacity and passion, and discussing working people and younger children. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise in parts, and some ideas, such as how hobbies specifically impact working environments, could be further substantiated with deeper examples. The response shows clear progression in addressing the prompt from children through to retirees, keeping a consistent perspective throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different demographic groups, such as working individuals and younger children, which helps guide the reader. However, cohesion can sometimes feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in its transitioning phrases, such as starting paragraphs with 'Starting with my belief' and 'One more rationale to substantiate my crux is'. Referencing is generally clear, but these slightly clunky transitional devices prevent the essay from achieving a higher level of seamless cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common items such as 'cognitive capacity', 'extracurricular', and 'personality development'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('psyhological', 'particiapte', 'adaptibilty') and occasional awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'which not improves'. These lexical slips do not impede communication, placing the response securely in the band where vocabulary is sufficient for the task despite minor inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as sentence fragments ('Rather than focusing whole day on curriculum, if schools implement and allot time for leisure activities.'), missing articles, and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'skills such as leadership, teamwork which not improves'). While these errors do not prevent comprehension, they reflect a limited control of complex structures, meaning error-free sentences are not frequent enough to reach a higher band.
