Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hobbies are essential to live a life beyond long planned schedules and meetings. They play a key role in individual's life. In my opinion, hobbies gives opportunity to spend time with oneself. It helps us to understand ourselves in a better way during each stage of the life.

Whether it is young children, busy adults or retirees, pursuing atleast one hobby indeed plays a crucial role.

For instance, children are usually busy with their exams and competitions. Majority of the time is consumed by their school activities. In order to recharge and reset the mind, playing their favorite sports or painting after classes would incorporate joy and satisfaction. Moreover, it will also helps child to develop new skills and critical thinking.

For working executive, hobbies are hidden talents or long lost dreams that were once skipped in between of responsibilities. Someone who is working to earn a bread and butter would surely be exhausted with his/her routine.Giving time to play musical instrument or watching movies will relax the mind and would be able to increase the efficiency.

Additionally, hobbies are most important to senior citizens or the one who is retired. Because, these is the free and leisure time they have to engage their mind in something they enjoy the most. This will also help them to reduce the feeling of being isolated.

To conclude my opinion, I believe people of all age should have atleast one hobby that brings excitement, joy and relaxation to their body and helps them in upgrading skills

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position throughout regarding the importance of hobbies across different life stages. The main ideas are extended and supported, moving through children, working adults, and senior citizens with relevant examples, such as mentioning exams for children and bread and butter for workers. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as stating that the majority of children's time is consumed by school activities, which sits comfortably at a solid level where the task is fully covered with well-selected supporting points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear overall logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph transitions well from one life stage to the next, fulfilling the criteria of a well-structured text. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'To conclude', reflecting the characteristics of the band. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical rather than entirely seamless, which prevents it from reaching a higher descriptor level. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct groups of people and their unique relationships with hobbies.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasal concepts such as 'recharge and reset the mind', 'hidden talents', and 'isolated'. There are, however, some word-choice and collocation errors that surface, such as 'earn a bread and butter' instead of 'earn their bread and butter' and 'give time to play' instead of 'taking time to play'. These errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the argument, but the presence of noticeable inaccuracies keeps the lexical score grounded at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and varied structures. There are, nevertheless, several errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'hobbies gives opportunity', missing articles such as 'helps child' and 'working executive', and minor prepositional flaws. While these errors are noticeable and point to control limitations, they rarely impede communication, meaning the reader can comprehend the core message without significant strain.
