Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that people of all age groups should have some exciting things, while it is true that recreation plays a significant role at each life stage. I firmly agree with the view that everyone should have one specific hobby due to several compelling reasons. This essay will not only elaborate on my viewpoints but also provide relevant examples to support it.

To commence with, one of the most significant reason is that having a hobby allows people to stay active in their free time. Because individuals have something to do according to their interest, they can not feel bored as will to some extent. In other words, when they take part in activity whether it is physical or mentally, it will help them to grow overall. For instance, if people have an interest in reading, it allows them to enhance their knowledge.

Moreover, another crucial factor to consider is that individuals have not rely on others to spend their time, especially it seen in senior citizens. Since reaching to this stage, their emotions change a lot, they want to spend and connect more with their family members but having some activity keeps them busy in their own life.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that having atleast one favorite activity play a prominent role in everyone's life, such as kids, adolescents, employees and older citizens. Because of the reasons discussed above like allows people to stay active, grow overall, enhance their knowledge and get rid of some emotions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that people at every life stage should have a hobby, and you give relevant reasons, including staying active, avoiding boredom and gaining knowledge through reading. The examples and references to older people also keep the response connected to the question. However, the reasons are only partly developed. The point about senior citizens wanting family connection is introduced, but the explanation of how a hobby helps them is not fully clear; a specific example would strengthen it. The conclusion mainly repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. To develop the response further, explain the benefits for more than one age group and show how each example supports your opinion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “To commence with,” “Moreover” and “In conclusion” make the stages easy to identify, and the ideas generally follow a sensible order. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Because individuals have something to do according to their interest, they can not feel bored as will to some extent” does not clearly express the relationship between the ideas. The second body paragraph also moves from family connection to keeping busy without fully explaining the link. Use cohesive devices more naturally, and make each paragraph develop one main point through explanation and a specific example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “recreation,” “significant role,” “compelling reasons” and “enhance their knowledge,” which helps communicate your main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “some exciting things” for hobbies, “grow overall,” and “spend and connect more with their family members.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less precise. There are also spelling and form issues, including “atleast” and “viewpoints.” Aim for natural, precise expressions rather than formal-sounding phrases, and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “Because,” “Since” and “when,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, errors occur in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction. For example, “one of the most significant reason” needs a plural noun, while “individuals have not rely on others” has an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “Because of the reasons discussed above like allows people…” is also grammatically incomplete. These problems make some sentences difficult to follow, despite the clear overall message. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and revise complex sentences to ensure each has a complete main clause.
