Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your position is clear: you strongly agree that people of different ages should have a hobby, and you give relevant examples such as reading, cooking, gardening and walking. However, the discussion is only partially developed. The benefits of reducing stress and staying active are repeated, while the examples are listed rather than explained in detail; children, in particular, are mentioned but not discussed. The conclusion adds meeting people and developing communication skills, but these points are not supported earlier. The response also falls short of the 250-word minimum: it contains 244 words, and 18 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Develop fewer ideas more fully and ensure the response meets the required length.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The paragraphs broadly group ideas by age or benefit, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help show the intended direction. However, progression within paragraphs is often difficult to follow because several ideas are joined in long, unclear sequences. For example, the first body paragraph moves from work stress to family time, English learning and gardening without clear links. References such as “they” also have uncertain antecedents. Use shorter, clearly connected sentences, organise each paragraph around one main point, and make pronoun references explicit to improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use a basic range of relevant vocabulary, including “reduce stress,” “physical active,” “garden” and “communicate skills,” so the reader can identify the main topic and intended benefits. There are also attempts to use topic-related language such as “vegetables” and “different ideas.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms or collocations are frequent and sometimes make meaning harder to understand. Examples include “firmally,” “healty,” “relx,” “fimaly” and “higygenic”; phrases such as “more important words” and “a opportunities” are also imprecise. Build accuracy with common hobby-related expressions and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary would help you explain benefits rather than relying on repeated general terms such as “important” and “active.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the response uses basic linking structures to express reasons and contrast. However, control is limited: many sentences contain errors in sentence construction, verb forms, agreement and articles, and these sometimes make the relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “I firmally agree with this statement du to hobby is very important they keep active” combines clauses without a clear grammatical structure. In “they hobby reading books,” the verb pattern is incomplete, while “retired people to have” lacks a correctly formed main verb. Practise building accurate subject–verb sentences first, then connect them with conjunctions. Check articles and agreement, and use a wider range of sentence patterns only when you can control them.
