Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary busy world, majority of human beings does not have any kinds of hobby or any leisure activity for them. Some people suggest that it is important for all people to have at least one hobby or their preferable activity which they would like to perform during their free time regardless of their age.

To begin with, the main reason behind having a favorable activity is that it transforms our life the way we live, because hobby fulfils our life with colors, entertainment or a physical challenge such as painting, gaming or watching Netflix series and playing a favorite sport. Furthermore, the life is often busy particularly for workers and they usually do not get any free time for themselves because they are fulfilling financial requirement and other necessary responsibility of their family and in consequent they are unable to provide any leisure time for their personal enjoyment. For example, in Canada majority of working class human beings are performing more than one job in order to have a stable life for their family and due to that they are not getting time for themselves.

Another major advantage of having an extra curricular activity is that people can socialize with the society by taking part in activities and they can form new connections. Moreover, hobby can support our mental health and maintain our stress level and exhaustion. To illustrate, according to one research, employees' stress level is usually more than 60% which is above the normal duress level but this can be reduced if they daily perform an activity which they like because it releases dopamine and help them to stay in normal condition. In addition, if children are having an hobby from early age then they may become a perfect performer and they may have a great future in that particular activity. Same with elderly people, if they add their favorite activity in their life they may kill the time by performing or playing it.

In essence, although it is hard to maintain work-life balance but everyone should have a particular activity in order to become a better human being and to have certain amount of entertainment throughout our life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that people of all ages should have a hobby, and you give relevant reasons, including enjoyment, social connection, stress relief, and opportunities for children. The examples about workers in Canada and children developing a skill help illustrate your points. The response therefore addresses the task, but some ideas are developed more fully than others. The discussion of workers focuses on lack of free time rather than explaining in detail how a hobby benefits them, and the claim about employees’ stress and dopamine relies on a broad, unsupported statistic. The points about children and older people are also brief. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation or a specific, credible example to make the argument more consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting benefits, and a concluding statement. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Another major advantage,” and “In essence” help readers follow the argument, and the ideas generally progress logically. However, some linking is mechanical, with several sentences beginning with “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “In addition.” Connections between points could also be clearer: the discussion shifts from workers’ lack of time to socialising and mental health without always showing how each point supports the central claim. Some references, such as “it” in “it releases dopamine,” are not fully precise. Use a wider variety of transitions and make relationships between claims explicit, while keeping each paragraph focused on a distinct reason.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss leisure and its benefits, including “socialize,” “connections,” “mental health,” and “work-life balance.” There are also attempts at less common or topic-specific expressions, such as “financial requirement” and “duress level,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. Phrases such as “favorable activity,” “fulfils our life with colors,” and “kill the time” do not express the intended ideas naturally; “duress level” is also an unsuitable collocation in this context. Repetition of “activity,” “life,” and “people” limits flexibility. Aim for precise, natural collocations—for example, “enjoyable pastime,” “add colour to our lives,” and “reduce stress”—and check word forms and phrasing when using more ambitious vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, using clauses with “because,” “if,” and “although” to explain reasons and consequences. Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “majority of human beings does not have” has problems with the article and subject–verb agreement, while “if children are having an hobby” contains an article error and an unsuitable verb form. In “it releases dopamine and help them,” the verbs do not agree, and several long sentences combine multiple ideas without clear punctuation. Practise accurate agreement, articles, and verb forms, and divide overloaded sentences into shorter units. Greater control of these patterns would make your complex sentences clearer and more reliable.
