Student answer (Band 6.5)

In contemporary society, a substantial number of people are so busy in their lives that they do not have addequate time for themselves. They do not have leisure time to have a hobby. A hobby is something that helps a person unwinds and releases stress. Before stating my opinion, this essay will analyze why a hobby is important for different group of people.

A hobby is any activity that an individual adopts and loves to do in his spare time. A hobby can be anything such as gardening, listening to music, painting, watching a movie or reading a book. Moreover, a hobby can be related to some exciting activities such as hiking, camping, swimming or mountain climbing. A hobby helps a person to feel relax and bring mental peace.

It is of paramount importance that everyone should have at least one hobby irrespective of his age group or profession. Furthermore, a hobby has different impact on different person. A child or a young adult must have a hobby so that he can get involve in some activity other than studies. Moreover, if a child follows the same routein everyday then it has a negative impact on his growth. For instance, in Canada, parents take their child for swimming classes regularly so that they stay happy and motivated.

On the other hand, it is adviseable for working people and the retired to have a hobby. Sometimes working individuals are so exhausted with their work life that they are unable to focus on their work, so it is beneficial for them to have a hobby so that they can have some time for themselves. For example, my uncle going on a fishing with his son once in a month to keep himself motivated and connected to his family. However, the life after the retirement become extremely boring. A retired person is not able to figure out how to spend his time because he always spend a busy day at work. Having a hobby like reading or watching a podcast keeps them busy. To illustrate, after retirement my father was very confused about how to spend his day. He was habitual of living a busy and productive life, then I suggest him to start gardening. He adopted gardening as a hobby and now he has a small farm and he grows seasonal vegetables and spends most of his times taking care of his farm.

From my perspective, it is crucial to have a hobby so that an individual can release his stress and focus on his goals more effectively. A hobby motivates a person and helps him to increase his productivity. Additionally, enables him to use his leisure time in a productive manner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear throughout: you agree that people of all ages should have a hobby, and the conclusion reinforces this view. You address children and young adults, working people, and retirees, with relevant examples such as swimming classes, your uncle’s fishing trips, and your father’s gardening. These examples help extend the main points and show good coverage of the task. Some claims, however, are broad or not fully explained—for instance, the statement that following the same routine has a negative effect on a child’s growth would benefit from a clearer explanation of how a hobby addresses this. The discussion of working people also shifts from difficulty focusing at work to having personal time without fully connecting the two ideas. Develop these links more explicitly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a definition and benefits of hobbies, age-group examples, and a concluding opinion. The progression from younger people to working adults and retirees is easy to follow, and examples are generally placed beside the points they support. You also use a range of linking expressions, including “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” and “To illustrate.” At times, however, these transitions feel mechanical or do not express a clear contrast; “On the other hand” introduces another group that supports the same overall argument. Some references are also unclear, such as “it” in the sentence about a child following the same routine. Use transitions that reflect the relationship between ideas and make references more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “paramount importance,” “irrespective,” “exhausted,” “motivated,” and “productive.” The examples of hobbies and the discussion of stress and leisure are expressed clearly, so meaning is generally accessible. There are, however, some inaccurate word forms, spelling errors, and unnatural combinations that limit precision: “unwinds,” “feel relax,” “different impact,” “same routein,” and “going on a fishing” are examples. “Watching a podcast” is also an imprecise choice for the activity described. Aim to learn common collocations as complete phrases and check spelling and word forms during revision. More precise vocabulary would make the argument sound more natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “so that,” “because,” and “after,” and several sentences communicate their meaning clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, although they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “a child or a young adult … so that he can get involve” needs a correctly formed verb, while “the life after the retirement become” has problems with agreement and article use. In “my uncle going on a fishing … to keep himself,” the sentence lacks a finite verb, and “I suggest him” does not use the appropriate verb pattern or tense. Review subject–verb agreement, verb forms, articles, and patterns such as “suggest that someone do something.” Proofreading these points would improve accuracy while preserving your range of sentence structures.
