Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, individuals spend the majority of their time performing their tasks and responsibilities, resulting in limited time for recreational activities. Thus, it impacts negetively to their overall health. From my perspective, having hobbies are essential as it has several advantages.
To commence with, hobbies are essential as people can have something to look forward to after exhausting day. Additionally, retired people tend to get bored and may suffer from loneliness, hence having a hobby can significantly occupies their time, resulting in fresh moods and high self-esteem. To exemplify, a youngster with no recreational activities might spend all of their time either studying or on cellphones, may contribute to stress or poor work-life balance,Hence, hobbies are essential for overall mental well-being.
To solidify my agreement further, extracurricular activities notably help in developing people's creativity and interpersonal skills. To elaborate further, it can help in improving people's social skills and gives them creative freedom as well, leading to more confidence. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe hobbies are essential, and the conclusion reinforces this view. You address the broad benefits relevant to different age groups, including relaxation, reduced loneliness, social and creative development, and physical fitness. The examples—a young person spending time studying or on a phone and a professional joining a football team—help illustrate your points. Most ideas are extended with explanations, although the discussion of children and working people is less specific than the points about retirees and the football player. To strengthen the response further, develop the age-group focus more evenly and make examples or explanations more precise rather than relying on broad claims such as hobbies improving “overall mental well-being.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting distinct benefits, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically from relaxation and mental health to social, creative, and physical benefits. You also use a range of linking expressions, including “Additionally,” “Moreover,” and “For instance,” to guide the reader. At times, however, transitions feel formulaic: “To commence with,” “To solidify my agreement further,” and “To elaborate further” announce the next point without adding much to the relationship between ideas. Some sentences also carry several linked claims, making the progression less smooth. Use simpler, more natural transitions and separate or reorder ideas where needed so each paragraph develops one main point clearly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary and show some flexibility with topic-related expressions such as “leisure pursuits,” “hectic schedules,” “interpersonal skills,” and “physical fitness.” These choices help you discuss several dimensions of hobbies rather than repeating one basic term. There are also attempts at less common or formal wording, but some combinations are unnatural or imprecise, including “fresh moods,” “occupies their time,” and “free time” in the conclusion. “Negetively” is also misspelled. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the vocabulary. Aim for accurate collocations and use formal expressions only when they fit the context; for example, describe hobbies as improving mood or providing a sense of purpose.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses with “as,” “therefore,” and “who,” and the football example is developed through a relative clause. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “having hobbies are essential” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “it can help … and gives” shifts verb form within a coordinated structure. In “a youngster … might spend …, may contribute,” the sentence lacks a clear grammatical link between the actions and the result. Punctuation also needs attention, particularly the comma splice and capitalisation in “work-life balance,Hence,” and the missing space after “For instance,”. Check agreement, parallel verb forms, and sentence boundaries during revision.
