Student answer (Band 6.5)

As people face increased responsibilities both in their careers and personal lives, I strongly agree that it is important for them to have at least one hobby. In this essay, I will be discussing the importance of an individual having at least one hobby in their personal life.

A hobby improves the overall living condition of a person. It provides an environment for mental and physical developement especially after a stressful period. With improved physical and mental development, a person experiences relaxation of the mind and body therefore preventing fatigue and sickness. For example, after a person experiences a stressful day at work, hobbies such as walking, jogging or playing soccer may help clear their mind while also giving them a joyful experience to improve their mood. This may improve their efficiency at work when they return to their daily activities the next day.

In addition, having at least one hobby may create an opportunity for people to spend quality time with family and loved ones. This help develop stronger relationships while also fixing broken bonds. For example, when a family spend time reading books together, they develop a strong bonds with each other, as well as resolving prior disputes between members of the family. Although there may be limited time for a hobby because of a busy schedule, the distraction created by a hobby lighten the mood and put people in a joyful state to improve relationships with each other.

In conclusion, with increased responsibilities people may not have time for at least one hobby, however I strongly agree that having a hobby is important in the personal life of an individual. It improves the overall living condition of a person through physical and mental development while also providing an opportunity to strenghten and fix relationships with friends and family.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you strongly support people having a hobby. You give relevant reasons, including relaxation and improved relationships, and illustrate them with examples such as walking after work and family reading. This addresses the task well. However, the discussion is not equally developed across the groups named in the prompt: most examples concern working adults and families, with little explanation of how hobbies benefit children, young adults, or retired people specifically. Some claims, such as hobbies helping to fix broken bonds or prevent sickness, would also benefit from clearer explanation or more measured support. To strengthen the response, develop one or two examples that show how hobbies matter at different life stages and explain the link between each example and your opinion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate benefits, and the conclusion restates your position. Ideas generally progress logically, and examples follow the points they support. Linking phrases such as “In addition,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The sentence beginning “Although there may be limited time…” introduces a contrast but then returns to the benefit of hobbies without fully clarifying the relationship. The repeated references to “a person” and “a hobby” also make parts of the essay feel somewhat repetitive. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and vary referencing where possible to make the progression more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss wellbeing and relationships, including “responsibilities,” “fatigue,” “efficiency,” and “quality time.” The meaning is generally clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “overall living condition,” “environment for mental and physical development,” and “the distraction created by a hobby.” There are also spelling errors in “developement” and “strenghten,” and “fixing broken bonds” is informal and somewhat awkward in this context. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for more conventional collocations, such as “quality of life,” “support mental and physical wellbeing,” and “strengthen relationships,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “Although there may be limited time…” and time clauses such as “when they return to their daily activities.” Most sentences communicate your ideas clearly, and errors rarely obstruct meaning. Some agreement and sentence-control errors remain: “This help develop” should be “This helps develop,” “a family spend” should be “a family spends,” and “they develop a strong bonds” has a mismatch between the article and plural noun. In the sentence about relaxation, a comma or a clearer clause boundary is needed before “therefore preventing fatigue and sickness.” To move forward, proofread for subject–verb agreement, singular and plural forms, and punctuation around longer sentences while continuing to use varied structures.
