Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is crucial for children, teenagers, young people both employed and unemployed and the aged to have a pastime. This may seem to be uncessary but in my opininon, I think it is important for everyone to have at least one reactional activity. This phenomenon is tailored to its health and social benefit to man.

Primarily, pastimes are very beneficial to both the mental and physical health of man.Engaging in activities we enjoy doing lowers stress hormones like cortisol and release good feeling hormones like endorphines thereby promoting concentration and increasing efficiency and productivity. For example, after a busy and long hours of work, engaing in hobbies like hockeys can increase blood flow to vital organs thereby bringing about relaxation.

Secondly, active moments like dancing, walking, jogging, gardening and the likesof others, keeps the body fit without going through the strict routine of gym. With these recreational activity, both children and the elderly who could not engage in gym or other strenous physical fitness activities can actually achieve and attain same fitness, as these active and even passive activities increases blood flow to the vital organs of the body.

Further, Hobbies connects us to a network of friends. Joining clubs, teams or classes increases our social network by connecting us to a range of people from all works of life. These engages us meaningfully and cuts down our loneliness. For example, one can make new friend from his or her

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you believe everyone should have a hobby, and you give relevant reasons involving mental and physical health and social connection. The examples of hockey after work and activities such as dancing and gardening help make the discussion relevant. However, the social-benefit paragraph is unfinished, ending with “one can make new friend from his or her,” so this point is not adequately supported. The response also does not fully develop how hobbies may benefit different groups, despite naming children, working people and older adults. It is 10 words below the required minimum, which contributes to the limited development. Complete the final example and explain at least one benefit for a specific age or life group in more detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction followed by paragraphs on health, fitness and social connection. Sequencing expressions such as “Primarily,” “Secondly” and “Further” make the main points easy to identify. However, the progression is weakened by the abrupt ending of the final paragraph, which leaves its example incomplete. Some links between ideas are also unclear: the introduction’s claim that the phenomenon is “tailored to its health and social benefit” does not clearly preview the argument, and the second paragraph repeats the point about blood flow from the first. Use a more direct thesis, avoid repeating supporting details, and finish each paragraph with a complete explanation or example. These changes would make the organisation more consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “pastimes,” “recreational activity,” “stress hormones,” “social network” and “loneliness.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common terms are attempted. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “uncessary,” “opinon,” “reactional,” “endorphines” and “strenous.” Several phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “active moments,” “all works of life” and “tailored to its health.” These do not usually prevent understanding, but they reduce clarity and control. Check spelling carefully and choose familiar, accurate collocations—for example, “recreational activities” and “people from all walks of life”—rather than forcing less natural expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sentence explaining how enjoyable activities affect stress and productivity, and a conditional example beginning “after a busy and long hours of work.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but errors in agreement, sentence construction and punctuation occur. For example, “pastimes are very beneficial … of man.Engaging” needs a space and clearer sentence separation; “active moments … keeps” has a subject–verb agreement problem; and “These engages us” also has incorrect agreement. The final sentence is incomplete, so its grammatical structure cannot be followed to completion. Review singular and plural subjects, and proofread sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied structures easier to read.
