Student answer (Band 6.0)

Entertainment plays an integral part in human's life. So, that is why it is essential for all ages of people to have at least one hobby. I strongly agree with this point of view because it gives them relaxation and build strong relationship among family members. I will elaborate reasons along with some examples in upcoming paragraphs.

Firstly, the reason why people need a hobby is that it is beneficial for their mental health. This is because it helps to entertain themselves. If they spend their free time by doing jobs or home work, they might experience fatigue. As a result, a person might struggle with serious cognitive problems. However, hobbies divert their mind and provide them a change. It helps to forget their responsibilities for a while and return to their task feeling fresh. Eventually it improves mental health. For example, some students who most of their time studying, are likely experience serious outcomes such as depression, it is shown that, to maintain mental well-being extracurricular activities are crucial. This balance would increase their concentration and decrease mental sickness.

Furthermore, hobbies are the best way to balance personal and professional life. Through these activities, people can spend time with their families, makes their relationships strong such as cooking or playing sports together. For example, family gathering give people a sense of satisfaction and a break from their work. This shift would rejuvenate them. As a result, it decreases family related stress and they are able to manage their personal life.

In conclusion, according to the arguments it is extremely crucial for humans to have a hobby since healthy brain can be maintained, help people maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that people of all ages should have a hobby, and the conclusion returns to this view. You give two relevant reasons—support for mental health and stronger family relationships—and include examples involving students and family activities. This addresses the task, but the discussion is not equally developed: the mental-health point has several linked effects, while the family example is brief and does not explain how hobbies apply to children, working adults, and retired people in particular. Some claims, such as students being likely to experience depression, are broad and would be more convincing with a specific, carefully explained example. Develop each reason with clearer support to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repeated links such as “As a result” and “This is because,” and some references are unclear—for example, “This shift” does not identify precisely what is changing. There are also places where ideas run together, such as the transition from “change” to “It helps” and the family example. Use a wider range of linking methods, make pronoun references explicit, and connect examples more smoothly to the point they support.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “mental health,” “cognitive problems,” “extracurricular activities,” and “work-life balance.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. Some less common expressions are not used naturally or precisely: “entertain themselves” is awkward in this context, “serious outcomes” is vague, and “mental sickness” is not the most appropriate collocation. There are also word-form and phrasing issues, such as “family gathering” where a plural or a different expression is needed. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating general terms such as “hobby” and “activities”; this would make the vocabulary more flexible and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures (“If they spend their free time…”) and clauses introduced by “because” and “since.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “it gives them relaxation and build” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “people can spend time with their families, makes their relationships strong” has an incorrect verb form after the comma. Other examples include “some students who most of their time studying” and “are likely experience,” where the clause and verb pattern are incomplete. Review agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, and proofread complex sentences to ensure each clause is complete.
