What's your opinion about this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

I completely support the statement. Irrespective of the agee, if there is something you like doing is kind of lifesaver.

Hobbies could be literally anything that you can enjoy without worrying about other things. Some people have some fancy hobbies like, golf, boating, or coin or currency collections and all. It does not matter how big or simple yours is.

For me, I love painting. Despite of not having any formal knowledge about painting and mixing or anything, I love doing it on my spare time. Especially, when I got a long weekend, or after a hectic week of work, I would love to sit and stare at a blank canvas trying to get some inspirations. More than just a hobby,I consider it as an art of escapism. It will help you to refresh your mind and escape from all those chaos in your life.

Consider hobbies as a reset button, for instance, If you had a very bad day and you want to relax, instead of watching something you can do something you can enjoy and which will lift up your whole energy level.

I used to struggle with my hectic schedule of classes and work during my college time and that is when I started to paint as a escape mechanism. Gradually, It helped me a lot to relax my mind and improve concentration to a certain level. One way or the other way, I believe it helped a lot with my side hussles and made me a more calmer person.

To conclude, having a hobby will definitly be a great way to find yourself. If you do not have one, try to start doing something rhat interests you. You will not know what you can do until and unless you start doing something.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the opening—“I completely support the statement”—and you give relevant reasons, especially that hobbies can help people relax and manage stress. The personal example of taking up painting during a demanding period at college supports this view and gives the response a clear focus. However, the task refers to children, young adults, working people and retirees, while your discussion mainly concerns your own experience and people in general. The benefits for different age groups are not explained, and some claims, such as hobbies helping with “side hussles,” are not developed. To strengthen the response, explain how a hobby could benefit at least a couple of these groups and extend each reason with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall progression: you state your opinion, explain the general value of hobbies, give a personal example, and conclude with encouragement to take up an interest. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and phrases such as “For me,” “for instance,” and “To conclude” guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. At times, however, connections are mechanical or unclear. The sentence beginning “Consider hobbies as a reset button” shifts abruptly into a long, awkward example, while “One way or the other way” does not clearly show how the point relates to the previous sentence. Use more precise links and make each paragraph develop one connected point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary to discuss leisure and wellbeing, including “hectic week,” “blank canvas,” “escapism,” and “reset button.” These choices help communicate your personal experience and show attempts to use less common expressions. However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors limit precision: “get some inspirations,” “escape from all those chaos,” “a escape mechanism,” “side hussles,” and “definitly.” Some expressions are also informal or vague for this task, such as “fancy hobbies” and “something you can enjoy.” Aim for more accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. For example, “gain inspiration” and “escape from the chaos” would express your intended meanings more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional phrasing (“if you had a very bad day”) and a contrast introduced by “Despite.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in both sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “if there is something you like doing is kind of lifesaver” lacks a complete, correctly linked clause; “Despite of not having” uses an incorrect construction; and “I started to paint as a escape mechanism” has an article error. There are also inconsistent capital letters after commas and full stops, as in “for instance, If” and “Gradually, It.” Review clause structure, articles, and sentence boundaries, then proofread punctuation. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
