Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is assumed that people of all ages from a child to a working professional to an elderly, is crucial to have hobby. In my opinion, having hobby is important because it gives a sense of satisfaction and can become an opportunity for career growth in future.

To begin with, having a hobby actually gives a level of contentment which means people are working longer shifts for paying for their basic essentials and after coming home from long hectic day, they can enjoy doing their favorite activities that provide them relaxation. For example, there are many individuals who like to cook, sing or draw as it gives them pleasure and make their life enjoyable.

Another compelling reason is that sometimes there is a possibility that hobbies can be taken as a full time job which means if a person is doing his most enjoying activity and getting paid for it, it can be a win-win situation for both the parties because people do best at things they like doing. For example, if a person like cooking and make it his profession, he will do this work at his full potential which will be beneficial for the company, customers and the doer as well.

I also believe that hobby could be a great part of anyones life as it can heal someone if they feel happy from inside while doing their favorite tasks.

In conclusion, as having a hobby is beneficial for career as well as self-growth. Therefore, everyone should have a hobby for their overall development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you believe everyone should have a hobby, and you give two relevant reasons—personal satisfaction and possible career opportunities. The examples of cooking, singing, drawing, and turning cooking into a profession help connect these reasons to real situations. However, the discussion is not equally developed throughout. The career point receives an example, while the claim that hobbies support “self-growth” and can “heal someone” is only briefly stated and not explained. The response addresses the question, but its ideas remain somewhat general. To strengthen it, explain more specifically how hobbies benefit people at different life stages, such as children or retirees, and develop the final point with a clear example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your opinion, body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your view. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Another compelling reason,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. However, the linking is somewhat formulaic, and the separate sentence beginning “I also believe” introduces a new idea without developing it or connecting it closely to the preceding paragraph. Some references are also unclear, as in “it can heal someone,” where “it” could refer to a hobby or an activity. Group related points into fully developed paragraphs and use clearer links between the benefits to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “sense of satisfaction,” “contentment,” “career growth,” and “overall development.” These choices communicate your main ideas, and phrases such as “win-win situation” add some variety. There are also several awkward or imprecise expressions, including “a level of contentment,” “most enjoying activity,” and “heal someone,” which make parts of the argument sound less natural. Some wording is repeated, particularly “hobby,” “people,” and “favorite activities.” Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated terms—for example, describe hobbies as providing “a sense of fulfilment” or “emotional well-being,” depending on the point you intend to make.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “which means,” and “if,” so the response shows some structural variety. The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, the opening sentence has faulty agreement and structure: “people … is crucial to have hobby”; it would be clearer to write, “It is crucial for people of all ages to have a hobby.” Other examples include “people do best at things they like doing,” where the subject and phrasing need refinement, and “as having a hobby is beneficial,” which leaves the concluding sentence incomplete. Check articles, subject–verb agreement, and sentence completeness, especially when combining several clauses.
