Student answer (Band 5.0)
Hobbies are important at every phase of life. This essay agrees with the statement that every individual should have atleast one hobby to keep themselves independent and happy. Firstly, it helps in cognitive and physical development in children and teenagers. Secondly, it helps working proessionals and retired people to spend their leisure time productively and happily.
Knowledge of any art-forms or sports is gained at a very young age nowadays. This broadens their way of thinking and hence, improves their mental and physical health. A child learns and develops many qualities such as being confident and developing ideas by pursuing a leisure activity loved by him. For instance, a teenager palying cricket after school will be fitter and happier than the one not having any hobby.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that everyone should have a hobby, and you identify benefits for children, teenagers, working people and retirees. The example of a teenager playing cricket also supports the point about young people. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: the discussion stops after one body paragraph, and the benefits for working adults and retired people are mentioned but not explained or supported. The essay also falls short of the required minimum length, leaving the argument substantially incomplete. Develop each main point with explanation and a relevant example, and add a conclusion that restates your view.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your opinion, followed by a paragraph about children and teenagers. The signposts “Firstly” and “Secondly” help the reader anticipate the main points. However, the second point is announced but never developed, so the essay does not progress through the ideas promised in the introduction. The single body paragraph also combines several claims without fully connecting them, and there is no concluding paragraph. To improve the overall progression, give each main idea its own paragraph, use clear links between explanation and example, and finish with a brief conclusion. This would make the organisation more complete and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “cognitive and physical development,” “leisure activity,” and “productively.” These choices communicate the general ideas and show an attempt to use language beyond basic terms. However, the range is limited by the short response, and some spelling and word-choice problems reduce accuracy: “atleast,” “proessionals,” and “palying” are misspelled, while “knowledge of any art-forms or sports is gained” is an awkward way to express the idea. Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as saying that children “take up” a sport or “develop” skills. Expanding the discussion would also let you demonstrate a broader range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple statements and more developed structures, including the sentence beginning “A child learns and develops many qualities such as being confident…” and the comparison “will be fitter and happier than the one…”. Most of the meaning remains understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven in places. In “every individual should have … a hobby to keep themselves independent,” the pronoun reference shifts from singular “individual” to plural “themselves”; keep the reference consistent or use “people.” The phrase “a teenager … after school will be fitter” also needs a clearer comparison, such as “than a teenager who has no hobby.” Practise accurate reference, relative clauses and sentence construction while retaining this mix of structures.
