Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are those people who think that having a hobby for an individual is not priority which will have its own impact on the younger generations of the society. The idea is that many people are stressed out these days and they are developing some hobbies to unwind themselves from their busy schedule. However, I believe that having hobbies improves their mental health and also reduces the impact of cardio-vascular diseases.

When I was a kid, we used to live in large family groups but now people are shifting to small nuclear families. As a result, the elders of the family will be staying separately with no one to share their sorrow or happiness. So, to come out of this feeling, they need some sort of recreation in their lives. Hence, I believe having hobbies like going for a walk in the evening with their friends will make them feel energized and happy.

In this busy world, every individual is prone to harmful effects of stress. For example, one of my friend is working in a multi-national company. He starts his day at 7 am and ends his day around 11 pm. There might be small breaks in between for lunch and dinner but there is no space for refreshment. This makes him to lead a machine life instead of a natural one. Hence, having hobbies like gardening will refresh his mind.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that every individual should have their own hobbies in order to get relaxation and stress free life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you believe everyone benefits from having a hobby, particularly because it supports mental well-being and helps people manage stress. The examples about older people living separately and your friend’s demanding work schedule are relevant and help explain your view. However, the discussion does not fully address the range of groups named in the prompt: children and young adults receive little specific attention, and the claim about reducing cardiovascular disease is introduced but not explained or supported. Some points, such as the benefits of an evening walk, are also asserted rather than developed. To strengthen the response, explain how hobbies benefit different age groups and extend each main reason with a clear explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs give reasons and examples, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “As a result,” “Hence,” and “For example” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. This clear organisation is a strength. At times, however, the links feel mechanical because “Hence” is repeated, and the first paragraph moves from family structure to recreation without fully explaining the connection. References such as “they” in the discussion of elders could also be made more precise. For stronger progression, use a wider range of natural transitions and make each paragraph’s central point explicit before developing its example.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss well-being and daily life, including “unwind,” “recreation,” “energized,” and “prone to harmful effects of stress.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the reader can understand your examples. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural combinations, such as “not priority,” “come out of this feeling,” “machine life,” and “stress free life.” “Cardio-vascular diseases” is specific, but the essay does not develop this point. Aim for more precise, natural collocations and check word forms and hyphenation. For example, describe how hobbies help people “cope with stress” or “maintain a healthy work-life balance,” rather than relying on less idiomatic phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “When,” “As a result,” and “For example.” Most sentences convey their meaning, and the overall argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For instance, “one of my friend is working” needs plural agreement (“one of my friends”), and “This makes him to lead” should be “This makes him lead.” The opening phrase “having a hobby for an individual is not priority” also needs an article and clearer sentence construction. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb patterns after “make.” More accurate control of these forms would make your varied sentences clearer and more fluent.
