Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely believed that having atleast one hobby is important for people of all ages, including children, adults, working class and the retired ones, I completely agree with this view because hobbies help people reduce stress and develop new skills.

To begin with, one of the main reasons is reduction in level of stress. This is because people are extremely busy in deal with difficult studies and work which makes their lives extremely hectic and stressful. As a result, when they pursue hobbies it gives them time to escape this busy and stressed lifestyle and helps them to refresh and relax they mind. For example, people working always have to perform same tasks everyday at workplace which makes them feel bored and stressed, in order to deal with this people can go for playing games or spend time with family as a part of hobby. This demonstrates why these leisure activities are essential in life.

Another important factor to be considered is development of new skills through these past time activiites. To further explain, participating in recreational activites such reading, playing sports, chess, photography can help people enhance skills like patience, discipine, concentration, team work, problem-solving, coordination and vocabulary. For instance, someone in interested in playing chess will strenghten skills like problem- solving and strategic thinking. Therefore, it represents spending time in these activities could actually help human beings of all ages.

In conclusion, in my opinion engaging in hobbies would help people to relax and learn new skills in life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that hobbies benefit people of all ages, and the conclusion restates this view. You give two relevant reasons—stress reduction and skill development—and support them with examples such as workers playing games and chess developing strategic thinking. This fully covers the task’s central question. However, the support is uneven: the first example is explained more fully, while the second lists several skills without showing how most hobbies develop them. The discussion also focuses mainly on adults and working people, with little specific attention to children or retired people. To strengthen the response further, develop one example for a different age group and explain its benefit in more detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from stress relief to skill development is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Another important factor,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. Examples are generally placed beside the points they support. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, with repeated formulae such as “This is because,” “To further explain,” and “Therefore.” The long opening sentence also joins the general statement and your opinion with a comma, making the transition less controlled. Use a wider range of natural links and make references such as “these activities” clearly point to the relevant examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “hectic,” “recreational activities,” “concentration,” and “strategic thinking.” These choices help explain both the emotional and practical benefits of hobbies, and the meaning remains clear. There are also some inaccurate or awkward choices that limit precision: “working class” does not mean working people, “past time activiites” is misspelled and should be “pastime activities,” and “deal with difficult studies and work” is not a natural collocation. Several ideas rely on repeated general words such as “people,” “activities,” and “skills.” Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling and collocations carefully; this would make the vocabulary more flexible and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because hobbies help people…”) and conditional structures (“when they pursue hobbies…”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening sentence is a comma splice: the two independent clauses should be separated with a full stop or joined with a conjunction. In “it helps them to refresh and relax they mind,” the possessive form is needed, and “someone in interested” has an incorrect verb construction. There are also agreement and article issues in phrases such as “these leisure activities is essential” and “as a part of hobby.” Review sentence boundaries, possessives, and subject–verb agreement, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
