Student answer (Band 5.0)

Hobbies plays a vital role in people's life, regardless of their age or occuption. Therefore, everyone should have at least one hobby to spend time on it throughout their life. I opine, having a hobby make human physically and mental fit as well as able to develop new skills for their better future.

To commence with, hobbies help people to reduce their stress from their work environment if a person is doing a job or if a child is completing their higher studies to get good grades. In addition, playing any kind of sports such as Cricket and Volleyball not only helps to overcome anxiety, but also it can be beneficial to remain physically fit along with refresh mindset to complete their task on time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a clear opinion that everyone should have a hobby and give relevant reasons, including stress reduction, physical fitness, and developing skills. The examples of children studying and people playing cricket or volleyball help connect your ideas to the topic. However, the response addresses the task only partially: it ends after “Furthermore,” and does not develop the discussion across the different age groups or provide a complete supporting example. The required minimum length is not met, so the argument remains very limited and key points are left unexplained. To strengthen the response, complete the essay, explain how hobbies benefit working people and retirees as well as children, and support each main reason with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The opening gives your position, and the next paragraph develops a related reason, with “To commence with” and “Furthermore” signalling an intended sequence. This provides some basic organisation and makes the main direction understandable. However, the response stops at the beginning of a new point, so there is no completed progression, conclusion, or clear overall structure. Connections between ideas are also sometimes awkward: the sentence about sports combines reducing anxiety, physical fitness, and refreshing the mind without clearly separating these effects. Develop each point in its own paragraph, use linking phrases only where they clarify the relationship, and finish with a conclusion that restates your view.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “vital role,” “reduce their stress,” “overcome anxiety,” and “physically fit,” which helps communicate your main ideas. There is also an attempt to use more formal expressions such as “To commence with.” However, word choice and collocation are not consistently natural: “refresh mindset” and “spend time on it throughout their life” are unclear or awkward, while “occuption” is misspelled. The range is also limited by the short response and repeated references to hobbies and fitness. Aim for precise, natural combinations such as “refresh the mind” and “pursue a hobby throughout life,” and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms. For example, the sentence beginning “playing any kind of sports such as Cricket and Volleyball” uses a “not only…but also” structure, and the opening includes a subordinate clause about age and occupation. However, errors in agreement and sentence construction are noticeable: “Hobbies plays” should be “Hobbies play,” and “having a hobby make” should be “having a hobby makes.” The phrase “spend time on it” also creates an unclear reference after “everyone.” Review subject–verb agreement, pronoun reference, and the structure of longer sentences. Shorter, carefully controlled sentences would help you express the ideas accurately while you build confidence with complex forms.
