Student answer (Band 6.5)

People should definitely have hobbies despite of their age as having hobbies or side quests offer you a sense of entertainment as well as leisure in between your daily chaos.

I totally agree to this statement since it allows one to get out of the routine and have a little time to themselves.

It is extremely important for children and the retired to have hobbies which enhance their physical and mental capabilities like going for a swim, running at parks in the morning which provides fresh oxygen in the body leading to blood circulation and mindfulness. Playing games like chess and solving quiz could also help regulate the nervous system and exercise the brain.

It is also quite important that the working people or the middle aged have side quests in order to escape work pressure and maintain a life out of their offices. Most of the corporate workers have least amount of physical activities. Thus, it is quite recommended for them to play pickle ball with friends. This would keep them entertained and allow to exert more. They could also join a gym or a club for weekends to play badminton or paddle. For mental clarity a yoga class should be preferred which will let them practice calmness and relaxation. My father who is a businessman also worksout in the mornings to keep himself fit and he says gym feels like a coping mechanism in his hustling days.

Overall, its really important for one to have hobbies as it is a form of self care in this chaotic world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening and remains consistent: you agree that people of all ages should have hobbies. You address children, retired people and working adults, and support your view with examples such as swimming, chess, exercise and your father’s gym routine. This gives the response relevant coverage and some personal support. However, the discussion is uneven: the benefits for children and retired people are listed briefly, while the section on working adults is more developed. Some claims, such as exercise improving blood circulation or chess regulating the nervous system, would be stronger with clearer explanation or more cautious wording. To develop the response further, explain how particular hobbies benefit each group and connect those benefits directly to your overall argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable progression: it states your opinion, discusses hobbies for younger and older people, then considers working adults before concluding. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main points, and linking expressions such as “It is also” and “Thus” make relationships between ideas clear. The overall organisation is coherent, but some connections feel mechanical, and the long paragraph about working people contains several suggestions without a clear order. The opening also repeats the central opinion in the next sentence rather than moving directly into a reason. Grouping examples by physical and mental benefits, and using clearer transitions between those categories, would make the progression more flexible and easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “physical and mental capabilities,” “work pressure,” “mental clarity” and “coping mechanism.” These choices help communicate your ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some informal or imprecise expressions reduce the academic tone: “side quests,” “daily chaos” and “hustling days” sound conversational, while “fresh oxygen in the body” and “exert more” are not natural or precise in this context. There are also word-choice and collocation issues, such as “least amount of physical activities.” Aim for more conventional phrasing and precise descriptions of benefits. This would help you show greater control of collocation and style while retaining your relevant examples.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “since,” “which” and “in order to,” and the main ideas remain understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “I totally agree to this statement since it allows one to get out of the routine.” However, there are some errors in sentence structure, agreement and punctuation. For example, “having hobbies or side quests offer” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “running at parks in the morning which provides” creates an unclear clause structure. The sentence ending “relaxation. My father” also needs a space and clearer sentence separation. Review agreement and relative-clause construction, and proofread punctuation, especially in longer sentences.
