Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Suman,

I hope you are doing well. I am very happy that you are planning to go to Canada next month as a part of your university studies. I studied in Sir sandford Fleming college and completed one year of Personal Support Worker Diploma. In this course, I did six months of theoretical learning and did four months of placement in a retirement home. The learning and expereince was very useful for me and helped me to get my first job in the healthcare field.

Therefore, I highly recommend you to take this program. Moreover, coming to Canada was a great opportunity for me as I get to know about people of different ethnicities and gained knowledge of different cultural backgrounds. Moreover, this helped me to make useful connections required to start my career.

Studying in canada not only provide me educational advantages but also helped me to become independent. I overcomes my fear of public speaking and improved my communication skills. I used to live in a rental apartment and learned to manage my expenses by my own, which taught me finanacial skills. It was a fantastic year of my life and brings various positive changes for me.

I wish you all the best for journey to study abroad. If you would like to know anything else, do not hesitate to ask.

Take care,

Harnoor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you name Sir Sandford Fleming College, describe learning about Canada’s ethnic and cultural diversity, and explain benefits such as gaining healthcare experience, improving communication, and becoming more independent. The details about your course and placement make the account personal and relevant, while the friendly opening and closing suit a letter to someone you know. The explanation of how the year helped your studies is strongest when you connect the placement to your first healthcare job; the cultural connections and financial skills are useful but could be linked more explicitly to her university course. A little more specific advice about what she might expect from studying there would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce your experience, describe what Canada offered, explain personal and educational benefits, and finish with a warm sign-off. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and phrases such as “Moreover” and “If you would like to know anything else” guide the reader. However, “Moreover” is repeated, and “Therefore” does not make the relationship between the course details and your recommendation entirely clear. Some ideas also shift quickly—for example, cultural knowledge moves to career connections, then to independence and finances. To strengthen the progression, group related benefits together and use a wider range of natural links or clearer references between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for a personal letter and communicates the main points, with useful phrases such as “different ethnicities,” “cultural backgrounds,” “communication skills,” and “manage my expenses.” You also use relevant study and work terms, including “placement” and “healthcare field.” At times, however, word choice and collocation are awkward or repetitive: “take this program” is not quite the same as recommending a year abroad, and “useful connections required to start my career” sounds overly general. There are also spelling errors, including “expereince” and “finanacial,” and inconsistent capitalization of “Canada.” More precise phrasing and careful proofreading would make your vocabulary sound more natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the contrast in “not only provide me educational advantages but also helped me to become independent.” Most of the message remains easy to understand, and you attempt to express several linked ideas in longer sentences. Some errors in verb forms and agreement remain, such as “I get to know” for a past experience, “Studying in canada not only provide,” and “I overcomes.” The final sentence, “It was a fantastic year … and brings various positive changes,” also shifts tense. Review past-tense consistency and subject–verb agreement, and check articles and prepositions in phrases such as “by my own.” These corrections would improve accuracy without changing your clear meaning.
