Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Harman,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing to give you some information regarding my experience while studying in Canada.

I enrolled in Project Management program for two years in Algoma University, Mississuaga, Ontario. My campus was situated in the centre of city so it was easy to commute by bus. I had total seven modules. Out of these modules, four classes were in campus while I had to attend online rest of classes. It was compulsory to attend all the classes.

I learnt several useful things while staying in Canada. I learnt about the culture and traditions. Canadians are very open-minded and they respect every country's culture. I explore many historical places where I broaden the horizons of my knowledge regarding history. I tried their special cuisines and drinks.

These two years were the best part of life because I came to know how to maintain our expenses independently. I learnt about the advanced technical gadgets. In Canada, the professors mainly focus on practical works rather than theoretical. This helps me to learn about different skills such as problem solving.

At the end, I had a wonderful experience during studying in abroad. I believe that you should definitely go over there because it will help you to gain knowledge about new things. I wish this information will be helpful for you. If you need any further assistance, please feel free to contact me any time.

Best Wishes,

Jasdeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a friendly, appropriate tone. You identify Algoma University in Mississauga, describe Canadian culture, historical places and food, and explain that practical teaching helped you develop problem-solving skills. The explanation of how the year abroad supported your studies is relevant, but it is less fully developed than the account of daily life: clarify how these skills or practical classes connected to your university course. There is also a potentially confusing detail: you say you studied abroad for a year, but describe a two-year programme and refer to “these two years.” Make the duration consistent so the reader can understand your experience clearly. Overall, the main ideas are relevant, though some need more specific explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The information is arranged in a generally clear sequence: you introduce your experience, describe your studies and life in Canada, then offer advice and close the letter. Paragraphing helps distinguish these topics, and phrases such as “I am writing” and “At the end” signal the purpose and conclusion. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “These two years were the best part of life” follows a paragraph about learning Canadian culture, but the connection to the earlier study details is not explicit. The repeated use of “I learnt” also makes the account feel list-like. Use clearer links to show how each experience relates to your studies, and ensure references such as “these two years” have an unambiguous antecedent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including relevant terms such as “modules,” “historical places,” “practical,” and “problem solving.” These choices help communicate your experience, and the tone remains suitable for writing to someone you know. There are also some imprecise or unnatural expressions, such as “advanced technical gadgets,” “special cuisines,” and “broaden the horizons of my knowledge regarding history.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for more idiomatic collocations and specific wording—for example, describe the kinds of technology or practical skills you encountered rather than using broad phrases. Check spelling of place names as well, since “Mississuaga” should be “Mississauga.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex forms, such as “because I came to know how to maintain our expenses independently” and “where I broadened the horizons of my knowledge.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “I enrolled in Project Management program” needs an article, and “I had total seven modules” needs a more accurate determiner structure. There are also tense and agreement problems: “I explore many historical places” should use past tense, while “This helps me” shifts from the past account to the present without a clear reason. Review articles, verb tense consistency, and sentence patterns, while continuing to use varied structures.
