Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear raman,
I am writing this letter to express happiness about your consideration to study abroad from the same university as I did my.
Fortunately, spending my year to get a degree from The University of Toronto is the best decision that I have ever made in my life, located in the heart of Toronto which is a well known city of Ontario, Canada.
Leaving in Toronto taught many things that we didn't get chance to have in our country, I had the convenience of Canadian market research, enhance my knowledge of different cultures, community-driven lifestyle and open minded thinking makes life more stress less.
Thanks to the university, I really get many extra curriculum skills such as Business analytics, marketing, strategy, etc that are required to be a successful person not only to run your own business, also to work in an organization at higher position.
I hope for your better future and whenever you need any help feel free to contact me.
Best Wishes,
Amandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: you mentioned the University of Toronto, described what you learned about the country, and explained the benefits for your studies. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention 'Canadian market research' and 'community-driven lifestyle,' these points are not fully expanded upon to show how they specifically impacted your personal growth or academic journey. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a friend's sister, though the opening is slightly awkward. To improve, ensure that each point is supported with a bit more detail to fully satisfy the reader's curiosity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For example, the transition 'Fortunately' at the start of the second paragraph does not logically connect to the previous sentence. Additionally, some sentences are run-on or lack necessary conjunctions, such as 'Leaving in Toronto taught many things that we didn't get chance to have in our country, I had the convenience of...'. Using more varied linking words and ensuring clear sentence boundaries would significantly improve the flow and logical progression of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'community-driven lifestyle' and 'business analytics.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors that hinder precision. For example, 'stress less' should be 'less stressful,' and 'extra curriculum skills' should be 'extracurricular skills.' Furthermore, 'express happiness about your consideration' is not the most natural way to phrase your excitement. While your meaning is clear throughout, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and occasionally imprecise, which prevents you from reaching a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'Leaving in Toronto' (should be 'Living') and 'get chance to have' (should be 'get a chance to have'). There are also punctuation errors, such as comma splices where full stops or semicolons would be more appropriate. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of sentence construction.
