Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: it identifies the location (Canada/Selkirk College), describes cultural observations (generosity, social etiquette), and explains the academic benefits (applying business knowledge to a family firm). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend's sister. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the description of the culture and the explanation of the academic benefits could be expanded with more specific detail to fully satisfy the 'well-developed' requirement of higher bands. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are covered clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First of all', 'Also', and 'finally', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between sentences in the second paragraph is occasionally abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow the narrative flow effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their experiences clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'generous' and 'opportunity', but the range is somewhat limited. There are also several minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'Managemnet' (Management), 'intruppet' (interrupt), and 'their' used instead of 'there' in multiple instances. These errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more precise control over spelling and word usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including punctuation mistakes (e.g., 'I'am'), subject-verb agreement issues, and capitalization errors (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). The sentence structure is often repetitive, relying on basic conjunctions. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. More attention to proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy is recommended.
