Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Riya,

I hope you are celebrating for new adventure. It was so great to hear from your brother that you are thinking about doing a year abroad for your university course. Honestly, it is one of the best decisions you could possibly make, and I am so excited to let you know that I just finished my one year course at University of Toronto, I would love to share a bit of my experience to help you make up your mind.

I choose to go to Canada, and I spent my entire academic year living in Toronto city.

During my time there, I have come across people around the world who taught me their language. Of course, my English improved massively from struggling with basic greetings to actually chatting fluently with locals. But beyond that, I really got to understand the culture—like how warm and social people are, the value they place on family and daily downtime, and how rich their regional history and art are. It completely changed my perspective on the world.

As for my university studies, that year abroad was a huge turning point. Studying the same subjects from a completely different international academic perspective taught me how to think more critically and independently. Plus, the credits I earned transferred back smoothly, and having an international experience on my CV makes me feel way more confident about finding a job after graduation.

Let me know if you want to chat over the phone or grab a coffee sometime soon. I can give you some tips on budgeting and the application process!

Best of luck with everything,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the location (University of Toronto, Canada), describe cultural insights gained, and explain the academic benefits of the exchange. The tone is appropriate for a friendly, informal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, providing a comprehensive response that fully satisfies the examiner's expectations for this task type.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a friendly closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Beyond that', 'As for', and 'Plus' to transition between points smoothly. The progression of ideas is natural and easy to follow, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, contributing to a coherent and well-structured piece of writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the informal context. Phrases like 'make up your mind', 'turning point', and 'thinking critically' show a natural command of English. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and fits the tone well, there is room for slightly more sophisticated or varied collocations to reach the highest band. The word choice is consistently clear and effective, ensuring that the message is conveyed without any ambiguity or confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'Studying the same subjects from a completely different international academic perspective taught me how to think more critically and independently.' There are very few grammatical errors; however, there is a minor error in the opening sentence ('celebrating for new adventure' should be 'celebrating your new adventure'). Overall, the majority of sentences are error-free, and the control of punctuation and tense is strong.
