Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Priya,
I am thrilled to know that you are planning to come to Canada to pursue your business studies. I completed my course last month and had a great experience, gaining valuable knowledge during my time there.
First of all, I studied Business Management at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, Canada. It is an excellent college with experienced professors, and the campus is huge and equipped with high-quality facilities. I learned about real-life business planning, forecasting, decision-making and financial management.
Additionally, I learned several things about Canada. It is a beautiful country with friendly and welcoming people. Canadians are very polite and always ready to help others. I also got a part-time job during my studies, which helped me financially and allowed me to gain valuable insight into how organizations operate.
Moreover, studying in Canada gave me a better understanding of how businesses operate in practice. My assignments and projects helped me gain practical knowledge of various business operations, which complemented what I learned in the classroom.
I hope you have a wonderful experience in Canada and make the most of your year abroad.
Best wishes,
Priyanka

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the location of your studies (Fanshawe College, Canada), describe your observations about the country (friendly people, polite culture), and explain the academic benefits (practical application of business concepts). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend's sister, maintaining a helpful and encouraging persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the task. The response is fully focused on the prompt, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the opening paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your experience easily. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Additionally', and 'Moreover' to transition between points effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the opening and closing salutations are correct for the requested format. The flow of information is natural, and there is no confusion regarding the sequence of events or the connection between your studies and your personal experience in Canada.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context of university studies and personal advice. Phrases like 'pursue your business studies', 'valuable insight', and 'complemented what I learned' show a solid command of language. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the tone well, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions to add nuance. However, the current range is more than sufficient for the task, and there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writing is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as 'My assignments and projects helped me gain practical knowledge... which complemented what I learned in the classroom.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant grammatical slips. The control over verb tenses is consistent, particularly when discussing past experiences and future hopes. The clarity of your writing is excellent, and the grammatical structures used are appropriate for the task requirements.
