Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sana,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am glad to hear that you took a part time course at Toronto University same as I did it last year.

I have completed my course with good grades. Although software engineering technician course bit difficult as beginner like you, it was helpful to find the job with handsome salary. Studying at Toronto University helps you to improve your skills and boost your confidence.

Additionally, I have learnt programming languages such as HTML, CSS, basic java Scripts, database and php that help me to lend a job. Moreover, professors at University are supportive and college provides basic training with live projects which gives you practical knowledge.

Studying abroad can help you to grow both personally and professionally. You will learn skills like communication, networking and working independently.

Let me know if you need anything. I will be happy to help you. All the best !

Best regards,

Abhishek

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the location of study, what was learned about the country, and the benefits to studies. However, the response is somewhat generic. While you mention Toronto University, you do not describe the country itself or what you learned about it, which was a specific requirement. The advice provided is helpful, but the development of ideas is limited. To improve, ensure you explicitly address every part of the prompt with specific details rather than general statements about university life. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend's sister, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Although' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical, and the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel like a list of points rather than a cohesive narrative. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics requested in the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'personally and professionally', 'networking', and 'practical knowledge'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'lend a job' instead of 'land a job' and 'same as I did it' which is slightly unnatural. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive in places. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid basic phrasing. The spelling is generally accurate, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'software engineering technician course bit difficult' (missing 'is' and 'a') and 'college provides basic training... which gives you' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, the phrase 'took a part time course... same as I did it' is grammatically awkward. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with greater precision.
