Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Riya,

I hope you are doing good and I am so glad that you asked me for my advice. I studied in the Sheridan University which is in Mississauga. The course in which I was enrolled was Office Administrative Executive and it is the best University i would say. The country is so neat and clean, life here is so fast. Everybody has a hectic schedule here. If I talk about the environment so it is very pleasant. I learnt here who to manage everything alone. I have learnt time-management while living here.

Apert from that, my course was about learning foreign culture. Living abroad help me to understand it in a better way. I made lot of foreign friends here and they helped to understanding their culture more deeply. As a result, I good really good grades in exam and successfully got my diploma from here. I highly recommend you to take part in this university and completed you study.

Best Regards,

Tahalpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the location (Sheridan University, Mississauga), the country's characteristics (neat, clean, fast-paced), and the benefits to your studies (time management, cultural understanding). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation of how the year abroad helped your studies is quite brief and lacks specific detail. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more descriptive language or personal anecdotes. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend's sister, maintaining a friendly and encouraging register throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from that' and 'As a result' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the transition between the description of the country and the benefits of the course could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear central theme would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your experiences clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'hectic schedule' and 'diploma'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing or word choice, such as 'I learnt here who to manage everything alone' (should be 'how to manage') and 'I good really good grades' (should be 'I got'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on simple descriptors like 'neat and clean' or 'pleasant'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions to describe your experiences and feelings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'I studied in the Sheridan University' (omit 'the'), 'the best University i would say' (capitalization error), and 'completed you study' (should be 'your studies'). Subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency are areas that need attention. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the text. Focusing on proofreading for basic errors like articles, verb forms, and pronoun usage will significantly improve your score.
