Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mia,
I hope you are doing well. I talked with Raj last week, who told me you want to know about my experience studying abroad as you are thinking about doing same as part of your university education.
I did my study at Toronto university in Canada. It was one of the biggest university across Canada that is why I choose this place to do my study. It has diversity in culture as people from all around the world come together to complete their graduation.
One of the main thing I learnt about the country is that it has one of the largest country according to it's area with beautiful landscape all around it. It has great culture and all types of people can blend with each other due to their friendly and welcoming nature.
It has helped me in many ways to complete my study as in Canada they prefer practical approach to any topics rather than theoraticle study, As a result, I was able to clear my foundation of all the topics also the fellow students and teachers assist all the students with appropriate solution whenever they feel stuck.
If you wants some other details about this I would be delighted to assist you. I wish you best of luck for your future.
Take care.
Best wishes,
Bhumi.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the location of study, insights about the country, and the academic benefits of the experience. The tone is appropriate for a friendly letter. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the description of the country focuses more on general geography than specific cultural insights. While the response covers the requirements, it could benefit from more specific, personal anecdotes to fully engage the reader and demonstrate a more sophisticated level of task completion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'As a result' and 'whenever', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, but the connection between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to avoid repetitive structures. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the structure supports the reader's understanding.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their experience clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'diversity in culture' and 'practical approach', which are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'theoraticle' (theoretical) and 'clear my foundation' (build a strong foundation). To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise collocations and ensure spelling accuracy for academic-related terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('If you wants') and article usage ('one of the largest country'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in the fourth paragraph ('...theoraticle study, As a result...'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while focusing on error-free sentence construction will improve this score.
