Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Izzie,

I hope you are doing well. I just got your letter yesterday where you mentioned that you are planning to spend a year abroad in order to complete your university education and asked about my experience.

During my studies I stayed in Brampton city which in located near Toronto. I have completed my part of studies from Sheridan college, Davis campus. Monday to Thursday I spent my time at college where I not only attended my lectures but also completed assignments and projects by using library resources.

Regarding the country, I learned about different aspects such as Canada has two official languages English and French, but most of the French speakers reside in the Quebec province. Also, I visited different tourist attractions such as Cn tower and Niagara falls where I studied about the history of these places.

Lastly, my years of studying abroad was really helpful because this improved my social and communication skills which is a biggest aspect for surviving in corporate job sector. Apart from this, I got better job opportunities from north America because I have experience and knowledge about their demands.

I hope you find this information helpful, and if you need any other help don't hesitate to contact again.

Take care,

Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the location (Brampton, Sheridan College), shared specific cultural insights about Canada, and explained the academic and professional benefits of the experience. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend's sister, maintaining a helpful and encouraging persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully integrated; for instance, the transition between your studies and the cultural observations could be smoother to create a more cohesive narrative flow.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraph breaks for each requirement. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Regarding the country', 'Lastly', and 'Apart from this' to guide the reader through the text. While the progression is clear, some of the linking phrases are a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your transition words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. For example, the jump between discussing library resources and the official languages of Canada is slightly abrupt. Overall, the structure is effective and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'official languages', 'tourist attractions', and 'corporate job sector' are used accurately. However, there are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'completed my part of studies' (should be 'completed my studies') and 'reside in the Quebec province' (should be 'reside in the province of Quebec'). While these do not impede communication, refining these collocations would demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language and help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Brampton city which in located' (should be 'which is located') and 'my years of studying abroad was' (should be 'my year of studying abroad was'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as 'north America' (should be 'North America') and 'Cn tower' (should be 'CN Tower'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization of proper nouns.
